The FCC apparently agrees, giving it its wholehearted stamp of approval -- and as is so often the case with our federal friends, the approval comes complete with a full spread of glamor shots and a user's manual."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20070131-imatekjar.jpg" /><br /><br />Contrary to what's quoted above, the manual of the swivelin' K-JAR reports tri-band GSM/GPRS coverage, along with most of the other meager innards we learned from the <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,52088">October leak</a>: a TI OMAP 200MHz CPU, 2.4" QVGA display (ouch), and ancient USB 1.1, Bluetooth 1.2, and 802.11b Wi-Fi connectivity. What is i-mate thinking?

What is i-mate thinking? The same thing that allowed them to design and build the pathetic creature that was the JAQ.

If this had quad-band, plus 3G, and a larger VGA screen, it might be interesting.

"what is imate thinking?"

1.Imate thinks that consumers DONT want any more advancement in technology.
2.Imate also thinks that there're a lot of fools who ll buy their 'really-underpowered' devices.
3.Imate thinks they'll put forward a ridiculous price and people will buy them
4.Imate wants to make normal and power users to feel that we no longer are a friend of 'creativity'

I-mate might consider to team up with T-Mobile USA, also a big promoter of underpowered devices, so they could actually sell a few of this relics :devilboy:

I like the form factor... I even like the QVGA because all my apps work with it.

But I have got to have quad band and something faster that the OMAP processor. My 8125 has one... While it is usable it is not always a joy to use. ;)

Actually it is right side up if you are going to use the device in portrait mode. The display pivots like a tablet pc.

If you are talking about landscape mode then it is only of by 90 deg to the left. Still not upside down...

In the photo the screen my be upside down in it's current position but the base of the unit is right side up.

It's true i-mate has much to work on. When contract with HTC was over, they had to pick a manufactor who could offer some products based on Microsoft Windows Mobile. This was TechFaith (not sure if Inventec was behind the first JAQ). So, the "post-HTC" devices launched lately is aimed at customers wanting a device to sync mail, keep contacts in hand, appointments in calendar, and so on.

3G/UMTS is not covered 100% - mostly in large cities and those areas. In some countries better than other. Personally I don't want to pay xxxx bucks extra for a device supporting 3G right now, because it's connecting/disconnecting in my country. Ofcourse most of us *want* an high tech device, but is it would be nice to really be able to use this tech stuff also :)

12-15th of february 3GSM in Barcelona will take place. i-mate will launch/present new devices with new specs. It will be interesting to see if TechFaith will make this "Ultimate product line" - and how will they be able to compete with HTC ? Faster CPU, more memory, 3G/UMTS/HSDPA, services is my guess ;)

FYI, Inventec was behind the JAQ. Its codename was Mercury.
