Yes, whatever you're celebrating this time of year... Christmas... Hanukkah... Kwanzaa... FestivusForTheRestOfUs... here's hoping you're having a good time, not getting too stressed, and not getting the Holiday Blues.

Many people get the Holiday Blues this time of year, for a lot of reasons... too much to do... separation from family... feelings of inadequacy... lack of money. Many of those people would like to do more at this time of year, too, but have a hard time doing so because of one of the things listed above. Fortunately, there's something that can be done for Blues-feelers everywhere: Buy them a book!

That's right, what better gift is there than books? Books can entertain, pass the time, and make you feel part of something. And thanks to the invention of e-books, it's easier than ever to send a book to someone, in seconds, over the web! "Shipping? I don't need no stinkin' shipping! Haa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!"

So, send someone an e-book for the holidays, like... I dunno... a nice noir-style mystery, or some great sci-fi novels. Make 'em feel good about the holidays, and having you as a friend, and the convenience of e-books!
That's the spirit!

is that another political correctness thing?
i realized, a few days ago, when they had a bunch of "VIP"s say something about the 24th ... they all said "happy holidays".

is this to prevent non-christians to feel offended?

not sure where all this is going to end.

here in austria there seems to be a wave of "equal rights" going on, and some politicians actually want to replace 50% of all traffic-signs where the male symbol/icon is portrayed.

which results in

i'm sorry for abusing your post to ask this question ... but your thread title just sparked something in my brain that tells me "where is this going???"

sure, some words/expressions are old, outdated and offend people.

but why does someone feel offended, when a store clerk tells him "merry christmas", but he might celebrate something else?
why do austrians think that female construction worker icons will make the world a better place for women to live in ?

this is all going out of control, if i may say so.

nevertheless ... happy "whatever" to all of you.
i invited my family along with my in-laws, and cooked my first 11-pound turkey along with a bunch of typical canadian side-dishes.
maple syrup was used extensively, i even found some mountain dew in the czech republic ;)

hope your past days were as interesting, stressful but gratifying as mine were, and a good start of 2007 to y'all!

EDIT: to actually refer to steve's post: yes, buy your friends and family a book. and if anyone who likes to read uses a pocket-pc, get them a book from steve jordan. dont't let the sci-fi turn you off, his newest mystery is really really captivating!

The authour in one of the leaders in Daily Telegraph said that he personally threw away all Christmas cards that didn't have the word "Christmas" in them.

I don't really get many Christmas cards, but agree with him (and you): "political correctness" rules create more problems than they solve.

Happy New Year!
(Say it while it is still legal!)

I don't get why so many christians are offended by happy holidays.

I won't be offended if you say Merry Christmas to me(I'm not) if you don't mind me saying Happy Hannukah to you!

Agreed 100%. There's no "war on Christmas", it's just a concept invented to increase pundits' ratings. I tell people "Merry Christmas" all the time, and take no offense if they tell me the same. (In fact, I don't celebrate neither Christmas nor Hanukkah.)

"Happy Holidays" is just an inclusive phrase. I think it's more for the kids than anything else, so they don't feel left out. ;) My bigger problem with "the holiday season" is the crass commercialism. <shrug>

(Boy, you get a little too much nog in you and fire off a silly thread, and look what happens! ;) )

It's true, everyone is getting sooo sensitive about "offending" others, that they are becoming overly-sensitive about being offended. I say Happy Holidays to be all-inclusive, but I still risk offending people who don't celebrate anything in December (and yes, there are plenty of them!).

But I wasn't actually opening this thread to debate political correctness. I opened it to get people to read e-books over the holidays!

Well...

Actually, I did it because I had too much to drink that night, and I was in a very silly mood! (Can you buy breath-alysers for PC keyboards?)

But as long as we're talking about the subject: Those of you outside the U.S. may not know this, but in 2005, the Wal-Mart chain decided to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"... and received untold amounts of grief for their trouble. In 2006, they went back to "Merry Christmas," and now their detractors simply call them "gutless wimps."

Ya can't win.

To complicate matters: tomorrow is Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings Day), which is the real Christmas here in Spain; December 25th is really just a day off, being the first of the 12 Christmas days. They did a big Three Kings procession in my town this evening. So, no "happy holidays" here.
