New features include Bluetooth handsfree support, including initiation from the headset and new algorithms to better support Bluetooth-quality audio; support for Smartphone (like we care ;)); spoken incoming email announcements; and support for A2DP/HFP combo headsets.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20061116-VC1.6.jpg" /><br /><br />The price, you ask? $39.99 for a new copy, or $9.95 for upgrades. Handango has a link for purchasing the upgrade; I'm not sure how those of us that got it via other means (say, integrated into the 700w's ROM) should upgrade. If I find out, I'll let you know. In the meantime, if any of you have installed it, report back and tell us how well it works. [Affiliate link]

I just downloaded the upgrade from Handango and it's great to have BlueTooth support. It finally makes this into a really good product.

I have not been able to start from the headset button - I still have to press the button on the PPC to initiate the process, but it's a huge step forward.

After all the Handango bashing that's been going on, it's nice to say their support worked really well too. I had only bought the previous version a few weeks ago and an email to CS got me a download link for the new version in about 10 minutes.

It is odd but when authorized for upgrade and processing thru cart was finished.... I received an error saying that the software was authorized to be sold in my country (Kentucky in USA)...

This is very peculiar and a little frustrating.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

dh, Voice Command requires a soft reset after installation before the device will respond to the Bluetooth headset.

In addition to the Bluetooth support, I believe that V1.6 now properly displays contacts for WM 5.0 devices.

ebadger - I have tried soft resetting and I still can't use the headset button to start VC. I wonder if it is because of my particular headset (Plantronics 655) or the fact that my PPC (HP 6940) does not use the Microsoft bluetooth stack?

David - yes, contacts display perfectly with WM5.

Even if I have to press the phone button to start, this is still a major upgrade for me. It's fun to be a (50 yr old) kid with a new toy every now and again.

I can't get bluetooth to work via the headset button either. Is this a bug in the new release?

I can't get the upgrade the price.

I entered the email address that I purchased under (I even checked the receipt to verify the address) - but no go.

It is Handango after all.

It appears that BT headset initiation only works with devices that have the Microsoft BT stack.

If you have a device with a Broadcom/Widcom stack you can't initiate from the headset. You're stuck pressing a button on the device to start VC. Weak. :(

That's the same problem I had. After I contacted CS a nice young lady sorted it in no time at all.

Because my purchase was very recent, my upgrade was complimentry.

Previously, the answer was no. I'm not sure if that's changed with v1.6. Your best bet would be attempting to purchase it. In the worst scenario, Handango will not allow you to complete the transaction after detecting an Asian billing address.

Ok, I bit and now it won't install nor can I get Ver 1.5 to reinstall. It gets half way through installing and then times out and disconnects me. What am I doing wrong. I even did a hard reset and still it will not reinstall. Any suggestions? Both 1.5 and 1.6 act in the same manner. I have a Cingular 8125 PPC.

I can get VC to display contacts and start programs when I'm not using Bluetooth, but nothing whatsoever on either of my headsets. Also, even when just using the phone itself, NOTHING that requires a voice response or prompt (e.g., asking for the time, next appointment OR DIALING) works. What a waste of $!

I just purchased the new version and so far it has worked fine except for that when i use the voice command via the bluetooh headset (blueant x3 micro) it will have a hard time understanding my numbers when I say dial and the numbers. If I do it from the unit itself, it has no issues at all. I did notice that if I speak louder through the BT unit, it will work better. But that can get kind of annoying.

Hmm, looks like it could be a problem with ActiveSync's Add/Remove Programs feature. Have you tried copying the CAB over to your Pocket PC and executing it locally? You should be able to locate it in the Program Files directory of your PC (either in the ActiveSync sub-directory or a Voice Command sub-directory).

No, I wondered about doing it that way. I'll try it later and let you know. As I said, I did a hard reset and installed other programs without any problems. It was just MS Voice Command that was giving me the problem. Thanks.

I have purchased the upgrade, but I am not able to make the Bluetooth functionality work at all. I have an Audiovox 6700, and Plantronics Headphones. Not only can I not activate through the button on the headphones, but even with activation on the Pocket PC, I cannot speak the commands through the headphones. Once the call is initiated it switches to the headphones. Exactly the same as in the 1.5 version.

Anyone have the same experience? I also have tried to check the Microsoft site for support, and funny enough, nothing talks about version 1.6, but rather, everything is about version 1.5. Strange ...

I am sort of with amg at this time: What a waste of $$$!

Did you do a soft reset? I have a HTC 6700 and the bluetooth function works, except for calls being announced over BT as our devices do not support it. I.e. we do not have WM CE 5.3 on our device.

Have the v.1.5, and still think 40 bucks is a heavy price to maybe being able to do handsfree dialing 8O

The fact that you're not able to use all headsets, and activate it by pushing the HS button, combined with, that its only practical use, is for dialing, and operating the mediaplayer, makes it to useless for that price.

Now, if I could use it to operate my navigation program, then maybe I would think about upgrading :?

It should work fine on the 6700.
Can you confirm that you've installed 1.6 via the control panel applet?
Also, what does happen when you press the voice dial button on the BT headset? You may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling on the device followed by a soft reset.

For those of you having trouble getting VC to work over BT Headset, have you tried the registry hack (http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/blog/reydiodj/index.php?showentry=78 - and many other places)?

It may not work for everyone, but it's worked great for me w/ VC 1.5 . I'm just trying to decide if there is any good reason for me to upgrade....

Try to copy the cab file to your storage card using a USB card reader. Activesync really sucks at moving big files. It always disconnects on me. :(

Jason - you're my new hero. Thanks. Actually I was thinking about doing that but since I have a Cingular 8125 it has a mini SD card. Then I remembered it came with a SD converter and moved it over and installed it without any problem. However, after finally installing it and trying it, it sucked. It would not recognize my commands and continously asked me to repeat. So after all that, I uninstalled Ver 1.6 and reinstalled Ver 1.5 by copying it directly to the storeage card. Thanks again.

I was told, by Handango customer service tech in writing, that the reason that I am not eligible for the upgrade in price that the software for my smartphone (Cingular 3125) did not exist more than a few days ago and thus as a new product my version 1.5 product was different.

I really thought that the software was an upgrade from version 1.5 and thus included proper code for both the PPC and for Smartphone to function thus I would be eligible for the upgrade.

Can someone out there tell me for certain that the upgrade product works on both PPC or Pocket Phone version AND also on the Smartphone version?

I really think that this is another Handango attempt to sell more product but I do not know how else to tell.

If someone could try to install on both versions of device it would be wonderfully helpful.... PLEASE..

Thanks.

I actually did get Bluetooth to work last night. Not sure what the problem was. I DID the soft reset before, having read some earlier messages on this board than mine. I am not sure if it had something to do with the Voice Dial Software that was installed when I updated the firmware of the 6700 (which I did NOT like, because I had to program the address book entries for dialing, and there was no back confirmation of who was being dialed).

Anyway, seems to work now, and the upgrade was worth the 10 bucks.

Still, Microsoft's behaviour and role in this upgrade remains a mistery; now the website that I cited in my earlier post is gone (http://www.microsoft.com/voicecommand). When trying to follow a link on Microsoft's Wndows Mobile website for "more details" on the program, it links to a non existing site ....

No, they are jamming you. Be persistant. Smartphone support is simply a new feature in v1.6, not new software. But as usual, Handango is trying to cheap out on us.

I also got the "you are not elligible" message. But I have both a PPC and a Smartphone. I tried changing the default device to PPC, but it still won't give the upgrade to me - even though v1.5 is clearly in my software library on Handango and I have a confirmation email. I sent a message to them on Thursday, but no response.

It is good to read from a fellow user in battle with Handango about this issue. I hoped that I was not wrong in my arguments to them but I am having NO success. I hope that your email meets with success, if so please share the information.

Is there an MVP who can state for the record that we can forward to Handango, that the VC version 1.6 is in fact an upgrade and should not be charged out as a new product or platform?

The MS VC Website point to a null site and thus is not able to be used to force Handango to correct this situation.

Thanks for responses from MS MVP with knowledge to respond authoritatively for the community's benefit with the SOLE distributor of the product Handango.....

I am amazed that MS would not provide any other upgrade path other than through Handango. What about all of us that purchased boxed versions of MSVC?

I emailed Handango to ask about purchasing the upgrade for my boxed product and received this reply:

"Because we do not have a record for this purchase, we will be unable to assist you with the upgrade of this product. If you need further assistance, please let me know. Thank you.

Ryan"

I think it is pretty sad that MS sells this in stores but doesn't allow you to upgrade unless you've downloaded it from Handango.

I successfully downloaded and installed the UPGRADE from Handango. The upgrade process through the web site is VERY confusing, however for 3 reasons:

1) When you click on the link, "Please Click here for upgrade pricing", it takes you to a page that listed it at $39.99. on THAT page, you then click on "Update to version 1.6"

2) When prompted to enter the email address I ordered the previous version from, Handango said that it could not find me. So I searched through my email order history from Handango (I purchased several proeducts over past 6 months) and clicked on the download link in the email. This logged me in and somehow re-registered me into the database.

3) Even after successfully logging into the web site with the correct email address, Handango gave me an error on the next screen stating that it could not find me...

4) I chose the option to "Create a new" account and it allowed me to purchase Voice Command at the Upgrade price. Whew.

After the ordeal with downloading via Handango, I installed Voice Command 1.6 without uninstalling 1.5 first. It still intstalled successfully and so far no problems. I'll be testing it w/Bluetooth now...

Hi,

Thanks for posting this info! Questions though. I'm not sure about step 5. After you get rejected for the upgrade, where does the option to create a new account come from? And I'm not sure how that would even help in this situation since it's relying on you to be an old customer, not a new one.

On a side note, I tried getting a gift certificate for reward points. But I get an "error 0" when I try to redeem. Does anything from Handango work right? Apparently not.

I thought the whole point of this upgrade is so that the hack is not needed!?

Using 1.5 I do hear responses, music, and phone calls on my BlueAnt X5 headphones, but even with the reg hack I must press a pda button and speak into pda mic. I want to know this is fixed before giving anything more to Handango or Microsoft.

And from what I understand, it works if you have the Microsoft BT stack, but not the Widcomm BT stack.

Microsoft Voice Command version 1.0, 1.01, 1.50, or 1.51 must be installed on this DesktopPC and not installed on the Device. This upgrade cannot continue.

I have a Treo 700w and when I researched the problem, it was suggested that the previous version be removed from the device. It appears that the Voice Command installed on my Treo is in ROM as I find NO way to uninstall it (no program is listed to uninstall and I cannot find any program files to uninstall from the devices' file explorer). I called Verizon and they said to call Microsoft - Yeah Right!!!

Anyone know a work around for this?? Thanks

The upgrade does not apply to ROM installations such as with the Treo 700. It wouldn't do much good for you to upgrade at this point anyway since the Treo 700 can't do bluetooth audio gateway due to hardware implementation.

Gary, What device are you using?

HTC Universal, but we have used the same hack on other devices, not sure if version 1.6 works with other devices but it doesn't sound like it does from the posts I'm seeing.

Gary,

with the Universal, you should be able to use Voice Command after installing and doing a soft reset. If you cannot, please uninstall and resinstall and try again. Also, Voice Command 1.6 update will allow you to use Voice Commands on the Universal device while the lid is closed.

Thanks,

So even if I were able to do the hack others are talking about with version 1.5, you are telling me the Treo still would not be able to use voice commands from a bluetooth headset??

Thanks again

Hello everyone,
I could not get the 1.5 trial version to load on my 8125 but purchased Ver 1.6 and it works very well. After using my button setting to disable builtin voice command the bluetooth (Motorola HS850) looks up contacts announces new calls and appointments.
It actually works better with the headset than build in speaker.
Still learning but I like it.

Finally, I have been waiting for this for a while. Has anyone discovered any serious issues with it?

Did you install to main memory or the sd card? I have an 8125, but hate the thought of giving up all that ram.

The serious issue is that it doesn't work on some models.
If you have a TYTN (HTC Hermes), a Palm 7xx, or a Samsung Blackjack, you should hold off. HP devices (widcom BT stack) can't initiate interactions with the headset. All others should be OK.

Have heard positive feedback from Wizard, Apache, Tornado, Universal, Excalibur, StarTrek users.

Technically, install to main memory is the only supported scenario.
If you wish to brave the perils of installing to SD, you can with a small hack.

1) uninstall from main memory
2) install to SD card
3) edit the HKLM\software\microsoft\bluetooth\audiogateway\BTAGEXTModule and change the value to \windows\vcbthag.dll
4) copy the \storage card\program files\voice command\vcbthag.dll to \windows
5) shut down your phone gracefully (so registry can cache to disk)
6) start up

installing on SD card can be unpredictable and may cause voice command to crash

Hi

I am seriously considering buying v1.6 but I live in the UK.
I have noticed that there currently is not a UK version like there was with 1.5.

What is the difference between the UK and US versions?

Will the US version work for a UK native i.e. the difference between the US and UK versions is nothing to do with the different way words are pronounced between the two cultures.

Am I better waiting for the UK version?

The only differences between the US and UK versions are:

1) The TTS voice is different
2) The US version digit dialing listens for US dialing rules, UK version listens for UK dialing rules.

If you plan to use the digit dialing feature in the UK, you will not be successful if you are using the US version. The system will never recognize a phone number that is based on european standards. If you plan on using the digit dialing feature, you are better off waiting for the UK version to release.

Thanks ebadger

The digit dialing was one of the main selling points for me.
So it looks like I will be waiting for the UK version.
