View Full Version : What is Your Favorite Yet Unsuspecting Software on Your Pocket PC?

When most people get a new Pocket PC, or when they decide to hard-reset it to a clean slate, many users will have a few, obvious third-party programs that immediately get installed before anything else does. And, if you joined a forum pending your new Pocket PC purchase, you will likely be advised by other members to pick up some of the most popular programs that they swear by, such as Resco Explorer 2005, Microsoft Voice Command, Tweaks2K2.NET, or Spb Pocket Plus.<br /><br />But, there will be others who will delve deeper into the Internet and find an obscure page in another language or by some hobbyist coder who created a program, seemingly tailored just for you. Sure, it might not have all the bells and whistles of its commercial counterparts - it might not even look pretty or have a real desktop installer - but it does exactly what it's supposed to do, and eventually becomes a permanent resident in your Pocket PC's main memory.<br /><br />What are some of the lesser-known programs you have grown to appreciate, or can't live without on your Pocket PC? Whether it be yet another file explorer, RSS aggregator, or task manager, there's something different for everyone, and the discoveries of others may actually surprise you.

1) Pocket Bible by Laridian: Student Pastor so having 12 bible translations and commentaries is essential.

2) Microsoft Reader: Love having library online.

3) SereneScreen for PocketPC (I'm author so I'm bias): Love having fish swim around while my HTC Apache (Verizon 6700) is craddled at my desk at work.

1) Orb: With EVD0 and a 300 GB hard drive on my home PC, I love being able to watch movies anywhere, anytime.

2)Pocket DVD Studio: needed to convert my DVDs to AVI so that I can watch them on my i730.

@abeery

I wouldn't call either Laridian or MS Reader as "lesser known" programs.

My list would include:

1. GSFinder+ - the poor man's Resco Explorer. The only things missing are the ftp, network browser and integrated registry editor. Total Commander is a good alternative as well (though I don't like the UI).

2. SP Timesync - like the title, it allows independent syncing of time with an internet connection.

3. MathInput - ok, I haven't actually tried this one yet, but it has me intrigued. It's an SIP that allows the input of math symbols into text.

PQz: http://www.nicque.com/PQz/

I replaced three or four applications with this one - check out what it does:

- Real "close" of apps via hardware button (including "OK" on hardware keyboard).

- Alt-tab-style task switcher (you can also Close or Close All from this).

- Insert Text. Same idea as the Inbox "Insert My Text" but you can use it anywhere. No more typing long phrases repeatedly.

- Ctrl and Alt mapped to any keyboard key (useful for shortcuts in certain programs).

- Select the default SIP in both portrait and landscape.

- Symbol window allows for easy entry of unusual characters when using hardware keyboard.

- Map a key combo to certain system tasks like Restart and Suspend, and also to directly open Settings programs like Power and Memory.

- Press-and-hold functionality for app buttons and softkeys!

There's more than just that, but those are the functions I really like. If you've got an HTC Univeral, be sure to check this out! Oh, and did I mention it's completely free?

SKMenu; task switcher, cascading menus, assorted small stuff without all the bloat (but still powerful enough to be useful to me).

My not-so-well-known must-haves:

Where is my RAM? (http://mypaq.net/mobilesoft/wimr/) - oldie but a goodie!
MagicButton (http://www.ehewlett.net/2005/02/pocket-pc-mini-review-check-out-magic.htm) - my favourite task-switcher/manager
TotalCommander (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm) - all-in-one multi-window file-manager, FTP client, ZIP/unZIP, and registry editor!

All not all that well-known and all free!

PocketNester NES emulator... And of course all of the old ROM files of the games I grew up with.

Nefa Studio nfcanvas2... Mobile Painting, it's a free app that is no longer being developed but is pretty good at what it does. Some of the characters are in Japanese, the menu structure is a little odd but for a free application it it's pretty good. Very often people can't tell that the painting were done on a mobile device...other than the fact that they are the same resolution and size as my phone screen.

Wow, I'm glad I wrote this post. I haven't heard of more than half of these programs. I'll Google them, but if anyone can provide links for future posts, it'll help or encourage others to try it out as well!

See, not everything is on Handango and PocketGear.

I thought I was going to be the only one to recommend this app, it's awesome! All I can add to your list of features is a couple of navigation aspects (ctrl+key to jump to today screen, ctrl+key for home/end), it also maintains a full clipboard of selectable copied text that you can paste from, it can also be used to initiate calls (ctrl+key for speed dial) and to launch web pages. This thing just makes non-stylus navigation so much quicker and easier. I'm almost ready to drop my today screen plugin with app shortcuts, I just don't need them with PQZ.

I love Handy Shopper (http://chrisant.home.comcast.net/hs3/hs3ppc.htm)
It's freeware and you can keep all types of lists in it - not just shopping lists.

Not sure if these count as obscure, but BookBag and AudioList from Wakefield Soft. (http://www.wakefieldsoft.com/) help me keep track of my collections and have stopped me buying things twice.

For the most obscure program, I choose Pocket NMRinfo (http://ganglion.unl.edu/pocketnmr/), which I've found handy at work. Unless you work in an NMR lab, it's probably not much use to you, though! Chemistry students might like it. It's also freeware.

MobSysc (Sync any folders on PPC with any folders on PC)
SuperAlert (open any files (ex mp3) or programs when alarm goes off)
Calc98 (very functional and fast calculator (free))
DoubleLauncher (Launch at most 4 appz by using one hardware button)
Spacetime (amazing 3D graphing calculator and pretty much calculate anything else too)
Opera (it's still in Beta and got some problem, but man, if you are using VGA PPC, this one load website way faster than anything else)
TeamOne Reader (support a lot of ebook format including those Palm OS ebooks I got)

Pocket Mindmap (http://www.pocketmindmap.com/): Capture notes or oraganize your thoughts in a graphical format that mimics the way you think. Sort of a project planner meets flow chart program. Works with VGA devices too.

I will also second Magic Button and Softick CardExport (CardExport turns your PDA into an XP native driver flash drive -- transfer data to and from almost any computer without the need for Activesync).

For a long time it was MeetingMute by PocketConcepts (link (http://www.pocketconcepts.com)), but the functionality of PocketZenPhone (link (http://www.pocketzenphone.net)) has blown that away. 1) Clonedvdmobile - I have used both pocketdvdstudio and pocket dvdwizard, both were good applications, but took too long to convert DVDs, at least 1.5 hours, sometimes 4 hours. Clonedvdmobile beats both applications hands down. I can convert a dvd in 35-40 minutes....AWESOME

2)The Core Media Player Project player (TCMP for short) I use this player for watching movies

3) SPB Pocket plus - great functionality, very useful and it will actually close your applications when you tap "x"

wow i use a lot of strange little apps. lets see...

Tillanosoft PocketNotepad (http://tillanosoft.com/ce/pnotepad.html) a nice simple notepad just like notepad on the desktop. Supports WM5.

Tillanosoft tGetFile.dll (http://tillanosoft.com/ce/tgetfile.html) a new open file UI. Works with several other programs, like pocket notepad and nefa studios mobile pencil and painter (which i also use)

Calc98

JWPce (http://www.csulb.edu/~mdouglas/jwpce.htm) Cool free japanese word processor works for pc and ppc

vxUtil (http://www.cam.com/vxutil.html) wonderful free network tool and xvIpconfig (http://www.cam.com/vxipconfig.html), ip config software.

ezdownload

itaskmgr which doesn't seem to work real well with WM5... :(

VNCviewer

Pocketputty telnet and ssh

nPOP (http://www.nakka.com/soft/npop/index_eng.html) email client

soo many others.. i have a bunch of exe's on my men card that i just keep moving from one device to another, smalltime, converter, several game emulators..

Just off hand, does anyone know if batmemtime (http://www.geocities.com/tomgigear77/Software.html) and/or tagenda (http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/kohgo/index_en.html) work on WM5?

I own Agenda Fusion, Pocket Informant and PocketBreeze, but I -use- SuperCalendar. Provides month view with icons (I made my own) plus views for day, and year. Great interface for appointment checking and setting. And no I don't work for or know them; just a happy customer.

Not a app on the PPC, but a must for the PC your sync'ing to: MobSync - Giving you the ability to sync from any directory to any storage card on your device.

I'll second that! I use MobSync to download podcasts from my PC to the storage card on my Pocket PC. This is a valuable application! Also, use Mortplayer to organize and play the podcasts. You won't regret it.

One other valuable application that is not a Pocket PC program is Karen's Replicator. It can be used to copy files (based on a variety of conditions and filters) between the synchronized files folder of each of your devices, so that changes in a file on one device show up on the other devices when they are sync'd.

I'll also second Tillanosoft's Pocket Notepad.

DictionaryEditor is still another one that allows me to store terms into the built-in dictionary so when it suggests words for me to use, my terms show up in the suggestions.

Cabinstl is a program I can't live without as well.

Kidcolor is a very basic program for drawing stuff, and my kids won't leave me alone asking to play with it.

Still another that not many people know about is Ruler. It's a ruler that's displayed on your screen that you can use to measure stuff, or just bring it up and use your Pocket PC as a flashlight, since Ruler has a white background.

The best part about this is, all of the above apps are FREE! Here are the links:

MobSync (http://www.pdagold.com/software/detail.asp?s=454)
Mortplayer (http://www.sto-helit.de/modules/wmpdownloads/viewcat.php?cid=4)

I wouldn't call TCPMP obscure  They hit one million downloads six months ago.

Kidcolor is a very basic program for drawing stuff, and my kids won't leave me alone asking to play with it.

Seconded, my daughter loves this program. I'd add that it's specially designed to protect your PDA from your kids fiddling while it's in use. The version that's here (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=4047), may not be the latest - it doesn't allow saving. Anybody want the file saving version can PM me (it's freeware and issued under GPL).

I like things simple. There are a lot of Today screens and such. The one that works for me is Pocketbreeze and its add on Contactbreeze from SBSH software, get them in Handango. For about $25 you get a Today screen that show all your appointents, anniversaries, birthdays, tasks, notes, email and Contactbreeze has all your contacts. It they gleen the info from your MS Outlook or an alternate PIM manager.

mcube's safemode (although i can't find a working link to this free app anymore) lets you boot your ppc in safe mode. always the first thing i install after hard reset. been incredibly useful for me, and saved me from at least one devastating hard reset.

yanceyware reader at yanceyware.com, for all you bible readers, (and book of mormon readers too, i suppose) is the best bible reader i've ever found, and it's free. the hypertext links, highlighting, bookmarking, noting, works very well. and the amount of literature available (albeit mostly for the LDS crowd, again) is great.

preibesoft hot death uno and pocket euchre always make it back on to the device, as does spicy pixel morphgear. a sucker for the games of my childhood.

Glad I read all 5 pages. :)

Let's see, the lesser common apps that I haven't seen listed yet. All free, I'm very much baised towards free/oss.

* KeePass (http://doncho.net/kppc): a password vault application, you got to get the desktop version (http://keepass.sourceforge.net/), to get the most out of it
* pRSSreader (http://pda.jasnapaka.com/prssr/): a very good news reader, come a long way in features lately
* News Interceptor (http://www.newsinterceptor.com/featuresNI3P.aspx): second favorite news reader, hard to use one-handed tho
* Pocket TV Listings (http://ptvl.thumbsupsoft.com/): as the name suggests. good, free, nice UI
* PocketPutty (http://halr9000.com/article/285): SSH client I just came across the other day
* PowerCheck (http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/powercheck.shtml): one-line today screen plugin, shows battyer &amp; memory stats
* cLaunch (http://home.pacific.net.sg/~welic/claunch.html): today screen app launcher, can't live without it
* NetHack (http://www.nethack.org/v343/ports/download-wince.html): old school RPG
* Space Trader (http://www.spacetrader.co.uk/index.htm): fight pirates, trade commodities in space
* Agile Messenger (http://www.agilemobile.com/agile_messenger.html): multi-protocol instant messaging, new WM5 version (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44082) in beta

Then I'll third TotalCommander, magic button, TCPMP, apMemo

Then a couple of payware games:

* Worms (http://www.handmark.com/products/detail.php?id=335)
* Atomic Cannon
(http://www.isotope244.com/atomic_cannon_pocket.html)* Acky's XP Breakout (http://www.isotope244.com/games/ab/ackys-xp-breakout.html)

Ok, with all that I think I win in this thread. :) Let's keep it going though, I never have enough software, man!

(P.S. go see V for Vendetta, was much better than I thought it was going to be, best movie I've seen in a long time)

2) Magic Button (Task manager)

3) TCPMP (Can NOT live without this)

4) Logmein.com (Not really an app but lets you control your home CPU through your PPC with internet connection)

PAY: (common ones but must haves)

1) Resco Explorer (Must have!)

2) SPB Backup (Backs up your PPC)

3) SPB Pocket Plus (Today screen not complete without it)

I don't have much on my PPC but these apps pretty much lets me do everything I wanna do!

I second, or third, or fourth (I guess), Total Commander.

For WM5.

I use Agile messenger, probably the best PocketPC IM software available

Two of the best free obscure apps:

SMS Notifier - Run it in the background, when your calendar shows that you are in a meeting or busy, it will send an SMS to a missed call letting them know you were busy, and when you will be available again. Or you could set it to notify every missed call.
http://aalialikoski.members.winisp.net/BlogContent/Projects/SMSNotifier/default.htm

Webby - Best free alternative to PIE
http://www.users.tpg.com.au/lordf/anoriginalidea/webby.htm

phoneAlarm is a great pay app - automatic profile switching based on your calendar (put your phone on silent automatically when in a meeting).

Socket Wi-Fi companion (http://www.socketcom.com/product/SW1221-596.asp) - it puts a meter in the title bar showing signal strength. It also has ping, traceroute, and dhcp release/renew utilities.

Ok, I wrote this but even knowledgeable people give it praises, and there is nothing else like it for the PPC.

PocketAI is a decision wizard that allows you to break down difficult decision problems and then calculates the output. It's like using the processing power of your PPC to boost your own brain power. 8O

These aren't my favorites since my favorite programs are are all well known software.

I like comicguru stumbled upon it while searching through korean and chinese sites for ppc software. Works supriseing well. Can convert your scanned comics to read on your ppc. However you need comics with fairly large text for it to be worth while.

Since I'm not chinese I also like d-ear chinese full sentence. Helps me when imputing chinese into my documents by auto suggesting words.

Not sure if this is obscure but I like the ppod ipod emulator program.
