But I had to try running the Opera mini J2ME application on my i-mate Jasjar (HTC Universal) for two reasons: to see if it works, and to prove to some people that yes you can run Java apps on Windows Mobile Pocket PC devices. First you have to be using the i-mate Jasjar because it comes with intent Java Midlet Manager."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/operaminiuniversal1.jpg" /><br /><br />For all of you "Because I Can" people out there, here is your hack for Christmas. Run Opera on your JasJar, amaze your friends and annoy your enemies. Although this might not be your preferred browsing method - IE, as the article mentions, is a bit faster for regular browsing!

This also works on the HTC Wizard devices and maybe all WM 5.0 devices. I have been using it on the Wizard since October.

It also works on my Samsung i730 running WM2003 SE, and the IBM portable java! :)

No Windows Mobile 5 needed! :)

yeah, I have been using the Midlet Manager that comes on the Qtek 9100 (HTC Wizard) and it runs ok... but to run one app to run another? I just go back to IE because it is there.

What it does illustrate however is that MS could do a much better job with Pocket IE.

...or you could just try the smartphone version of Opera on your WM5 PPC since it can run Smartphone applications (Yes, I've tried it and it works)....

When you use the keyboard, do you get a single or double characters? With a Smartphone app, no touch screen either... :?

My secret hope, as a Firefox user, is Minimo. It is not really in a truly usable form right now, but it gets better and better at every release.

Huh? What do you mean? Yes, no touch screen, but you can still use the hardware keyboard and the direction buttons. I have not played too much with it though, it was a while ago.

I have tried the Opera for smartphones on my Universal and I didn't like it.
You can't use touch screen and it's not really stable - had to reset my device.
On top of that it is not free. I guess I'll wait for PPC version or until Minimo becomes usable.

Oprea mini does not work on my k-jam. I can't even get it to download. Is there something else I should try or settings I should change?

Thanks.

I think it'll be easier if you all wait for the real Opera for Pocket PC release, hopefully due out sometime early next year. Having said that, this workaround won't stop you die-hard Opera users. ;)

here is your hack for Christmas

What only one hack for christmas! :puppydogeyes:

What about: Firefox on your PPC. How to port the full version to Windows Mobile.

Yes I know that you can use Minimo but it activly refuses to work for me! Also what happened to the Minimo road map:

011 -- Nov 23 (Piping)

* We will launch SSR Community Testing Effort.
* Investigate WebFontsWinCE 5.0 Support
* PPC 2002 Support

We are stil on 008 if i'm not mistaken :cry:

I copied the target.IMG file to windows but when I go to download opera mini all I get is a text file. Any tips or tricks to complete the download?

Nope, 0.12 has been, hopefully, released in the meantime (haven't tested it myself as yet because I have to use a pricey GPRS connection here). See my blog for a review of 0.11 - Minimo is really nice!

BTW, if you want to read an alternative tutorial on setting up and using Opera Mini on the Pocket PC (not just on Jasjar), read http://www.firstloox.org//forums/showthread.php?p=38051 .

EDIT on 06/01/2006: Written another, much more up-to-date one: http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&amp;p=427&amp;more=1
