Well, I guess we can expect 12GB SD cards at a reasonable price in a year or so....

It was originally $12,000 a year ago. It dropped down to $9999 4 month a go and now $7059. This is a pretty slow pace to me.

You'd think at that price, shipping would be included. 10 to 1 you have to pay extra for UPS to get it to you ;)

I bought a Nikon D50 DSLR a couple of months ago. Between the D50 and the D70 I decided based on... SD cards! The D70 is CF only, so the D50 was the option for me.

I can get the SD card out of the D50 and straight into my tablet PC, or Pocket PC. I bought two Pretec 133x 1GB SD cards for about US$80 each. They're fast! I don't even need much pause between shots.

Seriously, who would buy such a card for so much money off of expansis? 3, 4gig cards would only cost you $700, or so not $7000. Displaying such a card to your co-workers would only show your fiscal stupidity not your super geekiness. All the beta testers should get theirs free... and odd item...

I know, but the price is just CRAZY!!! Seriously, who can afford such thing? This is more than half of the price of a car.

Honestly I can understand the $7059 but why the $.95? Is that the deal breaker do they really need that extra $.95 to break even? I don't know who thinks this up but is sure looks dumb.

There ain't no such thing as CF only, you can easily put SD cards into the D70 :D

With a SD-CF adaptor card - true. You just always need to have a SD-CF adaptor on you all the time - and probably a SD-mini-SD as well. :?

This is why companies don't like to put out products that are leaps and bounds ahead of the previous version, they prefer to release a product that is one up on the previous version. The fact that they have invented this type of technology so ahead of it's time is amazing enough but then they have also decided to sell it.

The question that comes to mind is "Do you need a 40gig Ipod? Do you need that much space yet?", probably not. Technology hasn't come that far to need 12 gigs on your pocket pc. So my guess is they are selling this to people who are in desparate need of this space, not to Joe Public yet.

Seems pretty obvious to me that the target for such an expensive card is corporate or military clients who have a genuine and urgent need for the space it offers. Only the terminally geeky and unusually wealthy private citizen could possibly afford to pay so much.

Personally I would love at least 20 Gb of space on my PPC. I can easily find movies, tv shows and music enough to fill even 20Gb several times over. It is great to be able to watch my favourite shows (like SCRUBS and the Simpsons) on PDA as wait at the airport or relax on a plane. Sure I can carry about 40 or 50 episodes now, plus hundreds of books and other documents, but I want more, more, more I tell you MORE!!!

Actually, Yes. :) I own 350 CDs and the ripped MP3 from those plus a few 'on trial' albums that together take up 36Gb of space.

Well, ''need" is an interesting word. "Want" is probably what most of us do.

Those 12Gb CF cards are designed for press photographers with huge megapixel cameras such as the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II's and who shoot in RAW. They can afford (and often need) them.

Still, if they buy plenty, then we'll get them cheaply when the 24Gb CF cards come out in a few months. ;-)

In these situations, most people here won't use the full capacity of the storage device (CF card, SD card, iPod...) as intended by the manufacturers. Most of us will use some of that space for that purpose, and some for a "secondary" purpose such as packing around a recent harddrive image, their portfolio, etc. So whereas we don't quite need a 40GB iPod purely for music, we can certainly use the storage for other purposes.

I asked that same question when I bought my house except it was concerning the basement. If you have the space you'll fill it up and that goes for Ipod's, CF cards and basements. All use the same technology called the Packrat paradigm 8) . Any of these hi tech storage technologies will leave you bleeding.
