<a href="http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?HeadlineIndex=30777">http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?HeadlineIndex=30777</a><br /><br />Apparently Longhorn has been officially named Windows Vista, or least that is what was indicated at a sales conference in Atlanta. Vista means "a distant view through or along an avenue or opening."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2005/20050722-windwsvista.gif" /><br /><br />Ok, there are just too many jokes here. Sometimes I feel I am looking into the distance waiting on the next security update or service pack. :D So, in typical Pocket PC Thoughts fashion, let's change course here. Instead of actually discussing this name, what name do you feel would be appropriate for Longhorn?

I thought they've decided on calling it Windows "E-xp-erience" or maybe Windows XPerience :|

How about Long"wait" or Long"overdue". They could also follow the "i" craze started by Apple and call it iHorn or iXP :D

ooooOOOOoooo! A chance to be inflammatory! :devilboy:

How about variations on LongXXXX? Long-awaited, Long-overdue, Long-way behind Tiger?

How about they capitalize on everyone's favorite OS by naming it Windows ME version 2?

Sometimes I feel I am looking into the distance waiting on the next security update or service pack. :D

I've heard rumors that they are going to "hide" the service pack updates that are currently cluttering Add/Remove programs.

I have a ton of ideas but none are practical -

Name releases after animals -
Pit Viper, Anaconda, Wolverine, Tazmanian Devil

Name them after common cooking ingrediants -
Oregano, Tyme, Parsley, Sage, Paprika

I just don't understand why they didn't stick with their date naming convention when they went to XP (especially since then 2003 server came out with the same naming convention they used before).

While I can understand the name Vista I can't quite say that I like it.... I can't quite say I want to here someoen say "I think I am running Vista at least that is what I run at home"

What about WM200? (memory vacuum edition) the WM to keep it in line with the familiar Windows Mobile range that we already know

How about Longing. I've been longing for a real operating system from MS for many years. After the release next year(?), when people are asked what operating system they are running, they can just reply, "I'm Longing."

I cannot believe that they did not call Windows.NET, that would have been the right move.

Yeah, that would be a decent one.

Whatever they call it, Vista is sure to be ridiculed when it reaches the market. No matter how beautiful the new user interface may be, Mac users will say its hideous. No matter how stable and or how many innovative new features may be under the hood, Linux fanboys will say the OS is buggy and rehashed.

Do let's avoid all this now by getting any future troll comments out of the way. So here goes.

Vista is crap...

Vista is buggy....

Vista sucks...

Vista ate my cat....

Vista is bloatware...

OSX ruLez!.....

Linux is the future!....

There. I hope all the ant-Microsoft folks feel better now.

As for myself, I look forward to the arrival of Vista....sometime in 2008! :rotfl:

Shorthorn was one of the common suggestions when WinFS was removed from the initial release.

In carrying on the long tradition of excellence of the Windows ME OS, it could be called Windows YOU.

If they wanted to borrow from the marketing geniuses at HP, it could be called something like Windows 1917nrZ.

Or, we could follow the company formerly known as Pa1mOne and call it Wind0ws Zero.

Here's a question, if it would get called Windows.NET, what would the website be? www.windowsdotnet.com? www.windows.net.com? Would support for developers be at msdn.microsoft.net.windows.net.com?

For fans of 80's Americana, we could change it from Longhorn to Windows Long-Duck-Dong.

We need to think up a good acronym. This morning, I haven't had enough caffeine to think up a good one. My initial effort is:

Very Interesting Software That Appeals
or
Very Interesting Software That Annoys

Depending upon how you feel about Microsoft, take your pick.

Surely this forum will come up with much better suggestions!

When I saw this name the first thing that came to mind was "Del Boca Vista" - the retirement community Seinfeld's parents were at.

That's what I'm going to end up calling this OS, I know it.

Vista Cruiser from That 70's Show.

That is the first thing that came to mind for me. It always is amazing that large billion dollar companies can come up with the dumbest names.

That's all true, but it's also true that no matter what problems Vista has, Microsoft fanboys will cheer it on.

I personally liked "Longhorn"...

At least Microsoft was being honest about how they were going to stick it to me.

How about Windows XQ? YP? Windows YQ?

Does this mean the Windows XPerience is over?

I think Windows 2007 would have been nice, and probably classier.

By the way, did anyone else notice that Microsoft changed the Windows logo; the new logo has a spotlight focused on the center, just like in Tiger... :)

Yup, it sure is... 'cause this thing is going to be so constrained by various DRM schemes that you'll be lucky to start it up and login without having to phone MS each time to ask permission.
