View Full Version : RAM Upgrade on Server Completed - 'aint it Nice?

The techs at our hosting company took the server down today to perform the RAM upgrade, and our server is doing much better with 4 GB of RAM - it's quite snappy in the middle of the day, which was historically when it was the most sluggish. This is a great step in the right direction, but now that we're out of the danger zone, taking a hard look at our code is next. In the meantime, enjoy the newfound speed on the server. :-)

Hmm...it looks like there are some banner ads slowing down the page loads. <sigh>

Good to hear. :) Can't wait to see what's next from PPCT.

Ok, now it seems fast - I'm having some ISP problems today, so perhaps it's just me. How does it seem to everyone else?

Perhaps your server is now so fast that it leaves the ads behind?
Anyway, good work. I know it's a pain to migrate things, upgrade boxes and other stuff like this. 8)

Very snappy in the UK! It seems faster than usual. Hopefully it's not wishfull thinking. :)
Aong the same subject...What is needed to run a popular site out of home instead of a hosting service? T1 line? What specs on the server?

That's something I'd never attempt because it would be cost-prohibitive, and you could never match the network redundancy of the big players. But that's just me. :-)

Just feel funny. A guy who is a master of PPC and runs a lot of websites doesn't even know how to upgrade RAM by himself.

Umm...I'm in Alberta, our server is in Texas. That's a different country and several thousand miles away. So knowledge of sticking in a few sticks of RAM (which I can do) has nothing to do with it.

Anyway, seems faster (including the ads) here in the center of the country 8) .
Keep up the good work guys!

Huangzhinong, most webmasters of large sites like this one don't physically touch the hardware. It's usually hosted by professional companies who offer the data backups, 24/7 service, backup power, redundancy, capacity and direct links to the net backbone. It does not matter where the server is physically located and is unlikely to be anywhere near the webmaster.
I understand you did not know this, but you have you admit that your initial post sounded rather mocking and was just the tiniest bit insulting and unfair.

Actually, most websites that use third-party hosting (which they usually need due to bandwidth requirements) are hosted physically by the ISP in very secure data centers, and the actual subscriber isn't allowed to access the box. The host can cut costs by homogenizing and controlling the hardware deployment.
The only exception is colocation, but that's quite a bit more expensive and usually done for more specialized solutions.
So, the fact it's in Texas is just a second point, as a matter of fact.

You need a commercial telecom line, yes, one that explicitly allows hosting servers. The problem is that even a T1 can be much more expensive than signing up with a third-party unless you have the luxury of being very close to your upstream provider. Commercial DSL is cheaper and something you should investigate if you want, but even that can run in the hundreds of dollars per month.
As for the server, it depends on the nature of the website. The Thoughts Media website is extremely dynamic, which introduces a huge load. Our box is currently a dual-Xeon with 4GB of RAM, and it'll presumably scale up in the medium-term.

Why not sell the adspace yourself and keep the images and management internal to your content management system? That way, you KNOW how much you are entitled to for advertising, you get the whole thing rather than the tiny pittance of a slice adservers give you, PLUS you get to manage it yourself and not worry about a third party slowing the site down.

Ah Kim, you're always so matter of fact, like the rest of us are idiots. ;-)

I do that now, but when I don't have a "direct" ad (a paying customer) to serve, it rolls over to an ad network rather than serve up zero ads. The ad networks don't always pay much (especially when they keep 50% of the profit) but it's better than not having any ads at all.
If you know of a method to sell 100% of my ad inventory, every single day, I'd appreciate hearing it.

Heh...and nice new avatar Darius. It'll take some getting used to (I'm more visual than I thought I guess - I remember people's avatars much better than their usernames), but cool pic. :) Go LEGOs. 8)

Same here - which is why I've stuck with my Avatar for a whil now. I did not know who the odd Lego man was at first, but recognised who it was by the posting frequency.

i'd really like to see what you do with the mall man. I envision you having a virtual mall like they had a virtual church. That would be really nice. You could walk around and pick up your stuff and check out.

Haha...no, it won't be anything quite that complex. ;-) It's basically just going to be an area that will have affiliate shopping links, some Pocket PC Thoughts products (like our micro lights, maybe some clothing), etc. Nothing too fancy...though you'd think it would be fancy given that it's been "Coming Soon" for a really long time. ;-)

maybe some clothing
I had a thought. Do you remember the old "I Think, Therefore iMac" phrase used by Apple to promote their iMac computers? How about a shirt that says, "I Think, Therefore iPAQ"? It keeps it in line with the whole "Thoughts" and "Pocket PC" theme.

Apart from the fact that iPaq is not synonymous with Pocket PC (and many of have never owned, not have any intention of owning an iPaq ), I like it. The catchphrase does needs some work though.
We have discussed PPCT clothing before & I hope it will come to fruition. I would really like a heavy cotton shirt with a discreet PPCT logo on the pocket. :)

I know. That was the only thing that prevented it from being the most fantastic thing my somewhat-functional mind has ever conceived. ;)

What is funny is someona that claims to be technologically competent thinks web sites like this are run out of homes rather that by hosting companies.
