Inspired by the Gizmodo (http://www.gizmodo.com) articles, what's in your travelbag?

When you go on a trip, what gadgets and tech toys are always with you? Explain what you take and why you take it, etc.

8)

(don't read Gizmodo? Take a look at this (http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/whats-in-your-gadget-bag-glenn-fleishman-018067.php) for an example)

I'll stick mine up later. As for now, what do ytou have in yours?

First... the bag:

For just about any trip, I carry the Under Armour Corporate Brief bag (http://www.zero101.com/stuff/uabag.jpg). Big enough to fit a day or two's clothes, a notebook, and all the random gadgets you might need. Small enough to fit under an airplane seat or in overhead storage. Lots of padding to protect my gear. Kickass bag.

Ipaq PDA with PCMCIA sleeve
An older PDA, but still does the job, and is great to have along on little weekend trips. The PCMCIA sleeve gives me access to Wifi networks, and a 2GB HDD allows me to watch movies on long flights. The ability to chat, check and reply to email, and surf the web from a tiny device is a huge plus. Add my IRDA stowaway keyboard and I'll stay a happy camper for a good while.

20GB Apple iPod
Lots of music, and it's a portable hard drive. I don't think this needs any more explanation. I also pack a retractable USB cable (http://www.glblsrc.com/shop/customer/product.php?productid=16221&cat=283&page=1) for use while on the road.

Nintendo GBA SP
Gaming on a PDA is ok... but it just can't compete with the bazillion games available on the GameBoy. Plus, if I don't play games on my PDA, that means more battery time for surfing the web and watching movies.

Koss KSC50 headphones
Cheap (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005MNHL/qid=1091648369), and sound great.

Sony f505 digital camera
I have had this camera (http://www.digitaloops.com/sony-f505.htm) forever, and still really like it. Takes great pictures, isn't too big, and the battery life is great.

Penguin Cinamon caffeinated mints
Mints are always handy to have... especially on long flights that tend to make my mouth feel dry and nasty. Cinnamon goodness (http://www.thinkgeek.com/caffeine/candy/33a6/).

Um... and I think that's about it. If it's longer than a few days, I might take my Tablet PC from work or my personal Vaio... but I try to avoid taking a notebook computer with the recent crackdowns on security.

Well, I usually grab the following:

1. Pocket PC (With accessories to charge from any available place, and accessories for WiFi).
2. Notebook PC.
3. Headphones

And miscellaneous things depending on where I'm going. The bag? Usually a targus backpack.

As far as gadgets go:

Pocket PC
Targus Backpack
Charging cable
Misc. cards (WIFI, storage w/movies, books and music)
USB CF and SD card readers
Headphones
Cell phone
GPS (although it depends on where I am going)
Digital Camera

I think that's it (but if I think of anything else, I'll edit my post)

Well, I laughed when I first read this post, because earlier this morning my wife mentioned that we can open a small electronic shop when we travel together.

2 laptops -- mine is an entertainment laptop, hers is a 'serious' workhorse laptop
2 digital cameras -- minolta F300 and sigma SD9
4 handphones -- mine is motorola T720 and V600, hers is mpx200 and V70
2 koss canal headphones
Axim X5
1 axim charger, 1 motorola charger (for all 4 handphones), 1 nimh AA charger
Spare batteries (axim spare, motorola spares, lots of niMH AA, sigma spare) and a custom-made-variable-voltage battery pack containing 4 D-sized niMH batteries for emergencies.
Memory cards -- mostly SDs, with some CFs for the sigma.

Not to mention her beauty pack (quite an astonishing assortment of cosmetics, perfume, brushes, hair and skin treatments)

Lets just say that I hardly travel light anymore =)

Assuming 4 nights away ( a 'normal' consulting gig)

Dell 8200 Laptop
Tosh e755 PocketPC
GPS card
Assorted memory cards (CF and SD)
Portable DVD player
Recent DVDs
10Gb iPod (early adopter  )
Headphones
Cables, chargers etc
Nokia 6100 phone
Assorted socks, underwear, t-shirrts, jeans, toothpaste, soap, shampoo , razor, deodourant.
Cuddly teddy to remind me of my hunny.

All squeezed tight into a Targus backpack.

I squeeze into my POD.....

Canon S1
Zaurus C860
Charger for Zaurus
Charger for phone - phone's on my belt
Earbuds
WiFi card
Spare batteries for S1

If I need my laptop, I take my Hartmann briefcase as well. Often I get everything in there but leave the camera at home.

Edit: I decided this was too much of a squeeze - I have to take the Zaurus out of it's case and pretty much force it in. Found a super price on Podzilla so that will make things easier.

Um it's a blue Belkin backback. It's not on their site anymore so I have no idea what it's called or where to get it. I bought mine used.

You guys, this site, always inspires me. Like headphones, I've been on a perpetual search for a decent everyday bag. You wouldn't believe how many I've purchased, returned, kept, whatever. Part of my problem is that once you've had a tumi it's really hard to look for or accept anything else. It is such a nice bag. But finding a book bag that doesn't make me look like a student, or more importantly, and old guy trying to look young, is more challenging than you might think.

Long story less long. After reading this thread I decided to do some research on Targus bags. I found one that thought I might like and went to the store to check it out. Problem is Targus has reduced their retail presence but the guy showed me a Swiss Army bag. I love this bag. Easy to get into, all black, lightweight, many pockets, and it just feels good. The best part, $70 :D ! :D My days of $250-$450 bags are OVER. Thanks to you guys.

8O $450! What was that made of? How can a bag cost that much?

shawnc
08-06-2004, 10:04 PM
Well I should clarify. I paid less because I brought it off of ebay, but a $425 for a Tumi is about average. There are MANY that are much higher. Take a look at www.tumi.com. You'd be surprised.

Now having said that, I'm not implying that they aren't worth it. It's kind of like a high-performance car, you have to own one to appreciate it's value and quality.

No need to apologize! I didn't mean to offend you with my comment. Just wanted to point out that in fact it is not difficult at all for a bag to cost that much, even when you might be able to find a smililar or maybe better one for way less.

Hey, a girl knows her bags!! ;)

Actually, I don't think she was joking per se. Next time you go to a department store, and see the women's bags section, quickly glance at the stickers. I think you'll be in for a shock. ;)

(Mind you, many of the expensive ones are designed to take an incredible beating and still look like new.)

Ah those high-end branded handbags ...

My wife and I were visiting her family back in Japan last weekend. When we were in front of the Hermes store, she mentioned that the all-new autumn line of Hermes is out (Uh-Oh )

I asked her, why would she spent $3000+ just for a handbag ? She made a very innocent face, and said ... because it is a Hermes.

How about 10 times that much (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=63852&item=3496313142&rd=1)??? Here's a more eBay searches for "hermes bags" (http://search.ebay.com/hermes-bag_W0QQsofocusZbsQQsbrftogZ1QQfromZR10QQgcsZ1098QQpfidZ1271QQreqtypeZ1QQalistZa22750Q2Ca14Q2Ca56Q2Ca47Q2Ca94Q2Ca3801QQpf_queryZhermesQ20bagsQQsotrZ2QQcoactionZcompareQQcopagenumZ1QQcoentrypageZsearch). Yup. USD3000 is the lowest price for a brand new hermie :)

So those of you guys who thinks that the brand new Geforce FX6800 Ultra card is expensive ... think again :)

Guys, relax. Don't be so judgemental. People spend money on what brings them joy. That's what money is for. Trust me, most folks I know would think your crazy for spending over $300, and in many cases, over $500, for a glorified organizer. It's got nothing to do with being frugal, it's spending your money on what YOU find important. Just because you don't agree with someone else's choice is no reason to judge.

Actually, that came from her own salary. We both work, and we agreed that my salary is allocated for daily expenses (mortgage, living, travelling, apartment maintenance, car maintenance, household stuffs, movie, books, electronics, etc.) ... whats left goes into saving, while hers goes straight into saving.

My husband and I split living expenses, and all remaining income is separate. That way, we can buy what we want without too much grief from the other. That being said, we're both on the cheap side anyway. I certainly have never spent $3K on any item of clothing or clothing accessory. I, personally, would rather get a $200 bag and a $2800 laptop.

Today was a short jaunt. I had in my Podzilla: a Lil'Sync cable, the auto adapter for it, a spare SD card, my Sennheiser PX 200 headphones (highly recommended :way to go:) a cheapo cell phone just in case and the clip that came with my Piel Frama case. On my person was my iPaq 5550 in a Vaja case and my SE T68.
