I really suspect Sams is using the wrong picture for the iPAQ, though -- I think every unit except for the 4700 are using dpads.

yeah. that is a pic of the 4700. The new units are growing ever nearer.

CDW told me that they will be recieving the rx3400 and rx3700 on friday, the 23rd. They were supposed to be recieving 800 ipaq rx3400's yesterday, but the shipment was delayed untill friday.

That seems like a lousy price to me when you can get a dual wireless Axim for the same price or a High X30 for only $50 to $100 more, and currently for about the same price with coupons I saw on Techbargains.com. HP needs to price their units more competitively.

i agree with u. The X30 will slaughter this unit. also, 25mb of ram is pathetic.

Did HP suddenly forget how to: a) make cool looking PPC's and b) market cool PPC's at reasonable prices?

With all the hype surrounding the latest generation of iPAQ devices, I really expected something with a bit more bite. The specifications of this unit are nothing exciting.

I don't see the point to this model. It really shows no progress whatsoever aside from the updated OS. They should have just installed WM2003SE on a 1935. With these features it should cost half as much to compete. Heck, at least the Zires have cameras.

I agree 100%. Can someone explain to me the purpose of HP releasing this device instead of just upgrading the 1935/1945 series to WM2003SE? It seems like a tremendous wast of resources to release the same product in a different shell.

I am really starting to doubt HP's committment to the handheld market. It's getting to be more obvious that the talent that created the original Ipaq has moved on to other things and been replaced by the same design team that creates those huge big square things HP refers to as a "notebook computer".

h19xx Dimensions (WxDxH) - 2.8 in x 0.5 in x 4.4

vs this new POS Dimensions: 4.48” x 2.75” x 0.53”

Even the 19xx is still smaller except for the width but .05 is negliable.

Wow. I cant believe this thing is being released, the processor is even worse than the 1940.

Does it even have WM2003 SE? The specs state "normal edition"...

Wow! What a fantastic device! That bland styling and those retro specs at high prices are sure to draw a crowd! I should pre-order one immediately [/sarcasm]

What are they thinking? Right now I have an Ipaq 1915. A great little machine. It's not the fastest and I wish it had an SDIO slot, but apart fromt that...

This new device would be a step *backwards* for me; at least, I'm certainly not making one giant leap forward in terms of memory, speed, screen, size, etc. All the things that matter. And it's more expensive then what I paid for my 1915 last year. Well hell, where do I preorder???!?!?

Sam's Club isn't alone in posting the product in advance of its release. I stopped by RCS in NYC last Saterday. They had pictures and pricing for the entire "leaked" new HP product line. In the column indicating availability, every item is listed as "backordered". When asked, their salesman stated that they had not received any stock, but the units are due in on 7/23.

Vaporware is no longer the exception, its the rule.

What's really sad is that my maestro has similar features overall, and its over two year's old:

Maestro
OS 2002
Processor 206mhz
Ram (user available) 31mb
Filestore none
CF II Slot yes
SD (w/ SDIO) yes
Battery 900mAh
Dimensions 4.9"-3"-.7"
Weight 6.3 oz

rz1715
OS 2003
Processor 203mhz
Ram (user available) 25mb
Filestore 10mb
CF II Slot no
SD (w/ SDIO) yes
Screen 3.5" QVGA
Battery 950mAh
Dimensions 4.48”-2.75”-0.53”
Weight 4.23 oz

So while the 1715 is smaller and lighter, I still have more storage capability due to the CF slot. I doubt in regular usage you are going to get more than 4 hours of usage on a charge on the 1715.

You wonder why sales on pda's have dropped. There's not enough improvement in the product at the right price point to encourage people to replace their current pdas.

Yes and no. The Maestro was significantly more expensive when it came out. Moreover, it was known to have particularly poor battery life (although your experiences might vary). Finally, the Samsung 200MHz processor should be faster than a similar StrongARM and the display is much nicer. That said, this is certainly a low-end unit.

I just assumed it did because if it didn't, then it would be even more spectacularly pointless than it already is. I'll take it back if they price it below $250 though, but so far they don't seem to plan to. At $199, this would be pretty reasonable, and a good deal at $175. I think HP can afford to really lower the price for this unit, considering that it looks like they spent about $5 on it's R&D.

All original iPAQs were developed and produced by HTC for Compaq and then HP.

It seems to me that these new iPAQs were developed somewhere else.

And I think HP is about to make a big mistake with these cheap and boxy looking new iPAQ models (hx4700 being the only exception).

Maybe after all those years they want to help their competition?

I was just in CompUSA today looking at cameras, and I stopped by the PDA section (of course) and saw this device there for sale. I didn't make a note of the price (unfortunately) and didn't have much time to mess with it, as I was with my dad, but it wasn't impressive, except that it was the first WM2003SE device I've seen. It is only slightly larger than the 4155, but it feels much less comfortable because of the blockier shape. I'm just waiting for the 4700 now (and hoping that Toshiba produces an e830 :? ).
