What a sweet little machine! I'm looking for a replacement for my iPaq... except that I think I'm done with trying to make a Pocket PC replace a laptop. I'm thinking, maybe I want a laptop to replace my Pocket PC.

This little doozy weighs 2.7 lbs with the 9 hour battery, with a 1024 x 600 touch screen, and it runs WindowsXP. Measures about 6" by 9" by 1.4". Costs about $1200-1300 depending on the options.

Cnet reviewers weren't impressed (those Crusoe processors are kind of slow)--but every user-review on C-Net, e-pinions, and a couple of blogs say that they love the thing!

I had a Jornada 720 before and loved it, but the biggest problem was software availability. I wouldn't have to worry about that with this thing, would I?

I have a P5010D and love it, so I can vouch for Fujitsu's ability to make excellent tiny notebooks.

Um...err....like many things, I started it and haven't quite finished it yet. Because I bought it with my own money, and it's not a review loaner unit, it goes to the bottom of the list. ;-)

And for a lot cheaper than Sony's notebooks too. (And no memory stink, to boot). I did some research, and you know what? The P2000's look simply perfect, but they stopped selling them on their Website! What gives? They're just like a P1000 but an inch wider on each side, with an internal optical drive and no touch screen. Maybe the lack of the touch screen was what did it in.

Sorry for resurrecting a dead thread, but I just wanted to update. I've done some more research, and here's what I've found out:

According to Fujitsu tech support, the P1000 series' Crusoe processor really can't handle DVDs smoothly through the PCMCIA slot. However, one reviewer has reported great success with a 500MB MPEG file, and another is quite happy using DivX. On the one hand, it's dissapointing that this is not a performance machine by any stretch of the word; on the other, I never wanted to lug around an external optical drive anyway, and it saves me about $150 and 1.1 lbs not worrying about one (seeing as how it would not be my primary PC).

Regarding performance, most people's irritation comes from those flashy Windows XP effects; with those turned off, it functions like any other machine.

I have seen almost twenty reviews for the latest P1000 on the Web, and the only one that was lukewarm was C-Net's. Everyone else just freaking loved it. Unresistable appeal!

I discovered that PortableOne makes screen protectors for the P1000. http://www.laptopsinc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=GC&Category_Code=SPFP. They're kind of "ghetto" according to one user, but they work. Advertised 8 months to a year of use.

With the standard features--30GB hard drive, 256MB DDR RAM--and the extended battery for 10 hours+, the whole thing comes to $1238. I wager that Fujitsu has a Centrino version up their sleeve... but I also wager it will be $2500 at launch.
