<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.marsware.net/4436/index.html' target='_blank'>http://www.marsware.net/4436/index.html</a><br /><br /></div>I've seen a few different applications for delivering weather information to my Pocket PC, but MarsWare Technologies has an especially slick version, called <a href="http://www.marsware.net/4436/index.html">WeatherPanel</a>.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/adrian/weatherpanel.jpg" /><br /><br />All you have to do is enter your zip code into the application, and every time your device detects an Internet connection, WeatherPanel updates the information for your local area.<br /><br />Specific features are:<br /><br />• Displays current temperature<br />• Shows five day forecast<br />• Automatically downloads updated data when internet connection detected<br />• Forecasts automatically adjust to display only future dates<br />• Weather for up to four cities can be displayed<br />• Multi-threaded and optimized for speed and performance<br /><br />You can download a free trial version or buy the full version for only $7.99 from the <a href="http://www.marsware.net/4436/6955.html">MarsWare site</a>.<br /><br />But WAIT!! If you'd like to get an even better deal on this application (and at that price, about the only better deal you can get would be FREE), MarsWare is giving a free license to ten Pocket PC Thoughts readers! We'll randomly select the ten winners from the list of all entries.<br /><br />In order to get your name entered for this giveaway, all you have to do is post a response to this thread. In your response, include at least one reason why it would be useful for you to have up-to-date weather information on your Pocket PC.<br /><br />As always, there are a few extra rules:<br /><br />• You may enter only once.<br />• You must enter before 1:00am EST May 3, 2004.<br />• You may not question the selection of the winners.<br />• You may not whine.<br />• You may not make fun of Brad's eVEST (just thought I'd throw that one in)<br /><br />Good luck!

Hi,
Something like this would be useful for me because I travel a lot around Europe. I live in Prague, but because of my job, I quite often have to go to places like Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam etc, and at the moment Im going on to the internet and doing the research manually so I know what clothes etc to pack. Something like this on my ipaq would be more than useful!

Hi all,

i've been looking for some time already about program like that, and this seems like a good choice right now. I travel a lot and i will really use it.

I am always being asked what the weather forecast is, and have to delve down into an AvantGo weather channel. Something on the today screen would be neat...

I've two choices to find out the weather, turn around and look out of the window or use my pocket PC to find out, no contest really

Whish they would incorporate the weather icons they bought from me, but perhaps it is difficult to get transparencies working (I'm no programmer). :(

I could use this program, I like to take a day off every now and then (on a whim), and always end up in bad weather, ruining both my day and my mood. Now I'll always know whether or not it's an off day or an office day :-)

Like many of the others I'm a frequent traveler. I have a house in Houston but spend the majority of my time in Paris, Frankfurt, & Moscow or somewhere in between. This would definitely help out.

Why would this be useful to me?

My location info says it all - I am an Aussie but I live in Dublin. I love to know what the weather is like back home in sunny Perth - even when it torments me as the rain pours down here :D.

I also wish they had used Juni's icons. I haven't seen them, but going off the evidence of Juni's skins I suspect they are pretty impressive!

Not just that I travel quite a bit through Europe and US for work and need the information for packing very small onboard-cases :)
... weather also is a topic in the kitchen at my workplace - also THE source of gossip, so it's good to trade up-to-date weather information with the latest gossip.

...and it really looks like the cleanest of all the weather apps I've come across so far

...have I got one now???

Does it support Celcius opposed to Fahrenheit? Would be crucial for me.

I just downloaded and installed the trial version and yes it does support both Fahrenheit and Celcius. This was pretty important to me as well. I can never get my head around temperatures in Fahrenheit - give me a good logical measurement system anyday...

Here in Ireland they just cannot make up their minds wether they are using Metric or Imperial measurements. For example the speed signs are all in MPH while distances are (mainly :D) in Kilometres.

I am extremely busy with school and such, so i almost never get to watch any news at all, let alone catch the weather to figure out what i should be wearing that day! This would fix my issue of accidently wearing jeans and a sweater when its gonna be 75 ;)

Hi,

You made me register, finally... Well, I wanted to do it anyway. The app is ingenious, I have just installed it. It shows all the information I need. I was curious if it would support Poznan - the city I live in. It's in Poland. But it indeed does - all the information is presented on the screen and even though it does not show correct temperature information, the weather status icons still remain adequate. It even works with Dashboard. The only issue I have noticed is that it shows Mo (today) and then Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri and then again Thu instead of Sat... A bug?

Dominik.

I live in the Silicon Valley, and the commute here sucks on a good day, and get's worse when the weather turns. Having up-to-date weather can give me some clue about what I can expect when driving into work, and more importantly, if I should leave early or stay late to miss the worst of it.

oooh I would love to have this app. I currently use Journalbar from OmniOne, but because of their shady business practices, I will no longer be getting updates for my product.
I commute 50 miles each way to work(To bad its not 50 miles to work and only 1 mile home eh?) and my commute takes me along the shores of one of the great lakes. The weather can turn pretty quickly, so it would be great to have updated weather at my fingertips.
Thanks for the chance to win!

I would like it so that I don't have to pester my husband every day about what the weather is supposed to be. He watches The Weather Channel all the time. I can't stand it, but I do like to know whether I have to wear a rain coat or not.

Since the IT world has lots of ups and downs as far as employment opportunities are concerned, my business is a two-fold business.

On the one hand I'm an IT Consultant, and on the other hand I'm a Window Cleaner. Thus the name: All About Windows!

So, for my Window Cleaning side of things, I'm very dependant on the weather, so I'm always checking to see what I'm facing for the next couple of days. This would make for a handy addition to my iPAQ.

I think this is a nifty thing. Would love to win a copy.

For a reason, well I am totally forgetful with things. So usually I forget to pay attention during the news when I am home. Every time I do NEED to find out about the weather (planning when to mow, wash the car, go to the movies, take over parts of the world) I never could find out.

Having something like this quickly and easy viewable on my pocket pc would be great! Now back to the to-do list, anyone know where to buy a thermal nuclear hand grenade?

Hi, this program would be great for me because I often ride my bicycle eight miles to school and eight miles back, seeing the weather at a glance and knowing wether or not it will rain or severe wether would be great. Because one wouln't want to get caught on a metal bike in a thunderstorm with an iPAQ in one's pocket. People also often ask me for the weather because they know that avango has accuweather, but that takes way too long when you need to be able to glance and go.

Why do I need this software ? In a word: Denver !!! For those who have been to or lived in the Mile High City knowing the updated weather is important. For all those who say they live in a place where if you don't like the weather wait a minute, you ain't seen nothing till you've lived in Denver.

Case in point:

Thursday: 50 something, Rain turning to snow
Friday: 8 inches of snow (at my house), Afternoon: Sunny & 50
Saturday: Mid 70's (sunny & beautiful)
Sat Night: Snow (1/2 inch)
Sunday: Low 60's Sunny

Whats a guy to do ! Get MarsWare Technologies "WeatherPanel"

There was this one day where it went from 90F to Snowing in 3 hours but that's another story

Well,

At first light, I
Think about
How hot it will be!

Rays of light that
Perforate my
Aussie skin...it
Now it makes me wonder whether these,
Endless rays of
Light that

Fry my unprotected skin, will soon make me
Regret the
Ongoing development of
Melanomas.

Mum tells me:
Avoid the "SUN!"
Remember to put on your
Sunscreen!
Who needs sunscreen? When...
All I need is a
Reasonable piece of software to tell me:
Enjoy the outdoors...don't listen to your mum...cos there aint gonna be no sun today!

OK, that was probably the most random thing I have ever thought of. 8)

As I need to program my working days outside or inside and having a d+5 forecast displayed in one place is very useful to me.

Here's a constructive opinion: since the trial is already limited to 14 days usage and stops working afterwards, why then criple the functionalities? (quote: "Trial Version Limitations: Only one city will be displayed. Forecast Lows will displayed as 0.")

I think this makes it harder to fully grasp the total possibilities of the program. The time limitation is enough in itself.

I love today screen weather apps!

They're perfect for me, because I work for a Gov't contractor, and we're in a building that takes about 20 minutes to walk around the inside of the building, and it has no windows!!!! So I never ever know what the weather is like outside, until my wife calls and says it's beautiful out, or it's pouring out. The only windows are in the senior VP-type office area.

So I need this app until I get promoted, uh, 5 times? So pretty much I really need this program. :)

04-27-2004, 02:16 PM
Anyone who has a cubicle on the other side of the office from the windows needs to know what the weather is.

I keep my PCC docked during the day, listening to music and such. I COULD use my desktop to look up the weather or even run Weatherbug in my task bar, but why should I?

This is perfect. me? me? Me?

I live in Chicago, a city in which if you don't like the weather, wait a minute. I've experienced days in which the temperature has gone from 65 and humid at 8:00am to 35 and snowing by 5:00pm.

I'm also a LAN admin for a medium sized company with branches scattered throughout the Chicago area. Since I don't have a car, most of my travel is done by bus, el or foot. I don't have the luxury of zipping home to pick up a needed coat (or short sleeved shirt) in case of a sudden temperature change so it is essential that I know the weather ahead of time so that I can anticipate what to take with me.

... post a response to this thread. In your response, include at least one reason why it would be useful for you to have up-to-date weather information on your Pocket PC.

1) I still use AvantGo, and appreciate it a lot. The first thing I do after an update is access the weather forcasts and radar images, so weather information is an important part of my PocketPC usage. This would be a good supplement to the Avantgo weather reports.
2) I can quickly determine if I'll need an umbrella Friday.
3) Free stuff makes me feel good.

Looks like a jolly nice application. If I won the prize, I'd use it to find out what the weather was going to be in the next few days (sorry... was there supposed to be another reason?). If the weather was inclement I'd be envious of Brad in his nice Scott eVest (there... I think I've met the requisite conditions).

I'm over in Kuwait shipping fuel products into Iraq in support of the US military's Operation RIO (Restore Iraqi Oil). Temperature differences affect the weather here dramitaclly in terms of sand storms and strong wind storms. Those make my job even more fun than it already is - especially when the trucks simply stop moving. With accurate weather info with me all the times (I have a GPRS connected HP2215) I can more accurately plan convoy movements and the weather's projected impact on them. Freedom, Democracy, and US Subsidized Gas! I mean come on - who's got a better reason that that?

This is just the sort of thing that makes that quick glance at your PDA even more effective. Since moving to Denver, I've learned to watch the weather more. We had a few days of snow over the weekend and it will be sunny and in the upper 70s today. Tomorrow, high winds and the next day rain! :?

Suggestion: Reduce the height of the pictures or have different sizes for those with large schedules.

Nice work just the same.

This app would be sweat! Well, living in the SF bay area there are all kinds of micro climants. With the ability to program in up to 4 cities I could pop in my home (San Jose), where I work which is about 25 miles away (Redwood City), where my wife and I spend most of our summer weekends (Santa Cruz Beach) and where all our friends have moved (San Francisco).

This is great because it can be 80 and sunny in San Jose, Rainging in RWC, 70 and cloudy in San Francisco and 60 and windy in Santa Cruz.

I'm a severe weather junkie. During the summer months here in Florida we get plenty of thunderstorms and the occasional tornado or water spout over Tampa Bay. I'd like a shot at this. I just like to know the weather before I go to work without always having to turn on the TV or radio and wakeup everyone else in the house. Plus there's no commercials or 10 min waits (1010 WINS) for the next forcast because I just missed the last one.

wow, that's a lot of replies. Did anyone here ever use TodayPlus? It was a beta program that was just perfect in so many ways. It had weather, an app launcher, calendar, RSS news feeds and so much more. Too bad the owner of the program let the beta's expire without notice and took down the forums where the program was located. The only thing I really used it for was the weather. I'm a weather freak. I've got The Weather Channel's desktop weather running on every computer I own/use.

Planning ahead for skateboard trips and contests mostly depends on the weather. It's one of the things I must do in order to make my school and skateboarding schedules mesh. I've been doing this pretty much ever since I started skateboarding 7 years ago. It would be awesome to be able to hit up the wireless connection here at school on my way to class and see what the weather is going to be for the next week or so. Plus all of my friends know I pretty much check the weather 24/7 so they'll even call me up to ask waht the weather will be for whatever day. It's annoying sometimes but I gotta be useful in some way :)

I'd rather not spend any more money on programs (although it's very tempting) since I'm a college student. Hopefully I won't have to make an exception hint hint

This'd make days much easier for me - I'll be able to prepare for the weather before it comes, instead of wasting many many thousands of pennies each year on potions, sacrifices to the Devil and sorcery to control the weather to suit the clothes I picked out randomly from a cursed tombola I picked up at the circus.

I've tried other today screen weather plug-ins, and always ended up removing them. I either didn't like all the extras they displayed, or they didn't automatically update, and I would be looking at old info. This program looks excellent, and doesn't appear to be bloated with other useless (to me) features or high price. I would love to own a copy, and If I don't win I'll most likely buy it anyway.

Okay,

I had to stop reading at the 7th page. Amazing how many are willing to post for 8 dollars, we obviously all have too much free time.

My reasoning is simple. Try going to Handango or Pocket Gear and finding a simple weather program. News flash, you ain't gonna find it. Journal Bar is the closest, but it causes way to many sync issues with my XDA II. When you travel a lot you need a weather program so you can pack appropriately, haven't we all landed at Washington Reagan sand coat and it's 40 degrees outside?

I've downloaded the trial version and and it does seem to answer the mail for a simple weather program. I assume the second Thursday is in fact supposed to be Saturday. Also, they may want to consider adding a feature that prevents the unit from updating the weather over the GPRS line for those of us with Pocket PC phones.

Being in Hawaii, all the weather I get is sunny, sunny, sunny, sunny!

So it's good to have this program, and plug in a different zip code, and find out how's the weather in YOUR neck of the woods...

I use Journal Bar, but only actually use it for the weather, so this is ideal for me. I tried the trial version and the biggest advantage it has over Journal Bar is it actually displays a full 5 day forecast. I'm in Canada and Journal Bar only gives a 2 day forecast for Canada.

I'll be buying this one if all goes well with the trial (unless I win it, of course  ).

Hmmmm, very nice. Finally, I can see one thing the other similar products miss,... NICE ICONS. The whole thing looks pretty good aranged as well.
BTW: They (MarsWare) have a very nice web-page, one of the nicest on the net, I think.

That, and the fact that I'm British, and you know how we love talking about the weather !

Cool now I can know the temperature before I step out the door and not get wet. I just keep forgetting to look out the window every morning.

Also, this app looks cool on my today screen.

Well, I was about to download the trial, but instead of limiting it, the crippled it. I don't know about the rest of you, but I like to evaluate the usefullness of a product. Not just the look. Not just if it crashes during installation. Why you would take a product that has a two week time limit and then cripple it by leaving out a third of the information it provides, is beyond me.

But I guess I need to win it, because unless the wise up, I'll never try it, much less buy it.

I use Journal Bar right now, but hate that I'm using up all that space for features I won't want or need. All I really want is a weather bar like this. I need it because I teach at a college where lots of our classes have outdoor activities (environmental studies), so I need to keep track of the upcoming weather.

Why I think I deserve it?
Well, as someone who sits within the office the whole day it would be nice to at least know what it may look like outside... :|

I love having weather information on-screen. :) I work in a city 50 miles away from my home that is at a much lower altitude and has different weather patterns and temperature. It's nice to tell from a glance in the morning what weather to expect when I get to work.

I'm always on a time crunch. In the morning I sleep in as late as possible and try to get the weather from the TV as I'm getting ready for work. If it were on my PDA, I wouldn't have to worry, I could read it on my way to work instead of making sure I caught it before I left the house! Did I win? :D

I am a frequent traveler in business, usually every other week. I find it difficult to know how to pack to keep my bags light. Even when I am not "out-of-town" I am generally on the road and use my Pocket PC extensively.

Up to now, I generally use my CF GSM card to go online and check the weather but this is a cumbersome process, not to mention using valuable and costly kb's. The slow connection and the fact that most weather services available online are not formatted for PDA's make this an arduous task.

As I normally sync my Pocket PC every day, having a program like this would make life so much simpler and my time more productive.

Last year my family had our home destroyed by a tornado in Oklahoma on May 8. We are now in the middle of storm season again and weather in Oklahoma can be particularly dicey. In addition, my wife and I are out a lot in the evenings as missionaries raising support which leaves our two teenagers at home with their three younger siblings. Always having a recent weather outlook available would help us protect our children as we are out on the road.

Hi,
Something like this would be useful for me because I travel a lot around Europe. I live in Prague, but because of my job, I quite often have to go to places like Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam etc, and at the moment Im going on to the internet and doing the research manually so I know what clothes etc to pack. Something like this on my ipaq would be more than useful!

Andrew

I agree this is such a good idea and a evry useful tool.

This would be a killer app for me because, as a private pilot, after I moved to Seattle my flying time has been reduced dramatically due to the rain. With this I could know easily when the weather is going to turn better and reserve my plane before everyone else!

We are sorry for your experience, but the majority of our customers receive the software and key within one hour. Please also consider that this is a manual process so it may be delayed.

Our records indicate that we send you the full version + key on Thu 9:49 am, after having received your owner name sent on Thu 4/29/2004 8:51 AM.

We also sent a follow up email after we received another email from you claiming to not have received anythink.

Our best guess is that our emails are not getting through to you for some reason (perhaps some sort of spam filter ?).

In any case we have invalidated your code and sent you a full refund.

very cool, Ripper ( a fellow ppc'er) would go nuts over this. I'd be interested simply 'cause my retail food service job is weather dependent...
Can it forecast lottery numbers too? And does the forecast work in Canada? I mean can it use the Canadian postal codes?

And does the forecast work in Canada? I mean can it use the Canadian postal codes?

The forecast does work in Canada, but you cannot use Canadia postal codes. It is however, very easy to search for, and add cities in Canada throught the configuration screens.

The main reason I would like a wonderful program like this is . . .

I am a computer geek and work in a windowless dungeon! My PPCPE is my only connection to the outside world and having the weather displayed on the today screen would make me believe that, if even for a moment, there is a world, and living creatures, and WEATHER that I rarely have the opportunity to see - just the other side of the wall!

Well, back to work now . . .

I'm a frequent traveller, so having the cities programmed in for my upcoming (or current) trip would be very handy. But even when I'm in the office, my business unit has locations in four other international locations. It'd be neat to have those already programmed in, so when someone from Geneva calls in I could say "I heard that it's expected to snow tonioght..."

Did you already select the winners? If not, would love the software as my wife is always nagging me about what the weather is going to be like so that she can dress our children appropriately. If I had this, I could just wip out my iPaq and give her appropriate dressing instructions for the week. :D

Hi, I could use this program because I work in construction. I am in the concrete flatwork buisness and is is important to know if it is going to rain or not. Also temp and amount of sunlight will also determine how fast the concrete will set up.

I'm certain many could benefit from a program such as this. Being aware of the weather forecast with a "slick" application such as this has the potential to save trouble and time on several fronts. It could even be a money-saver if the forecast calls for rain and the umbrella you bring saves your good clothes from being soaked and needing dry-cleaning!

Thanks for the opportunity!
