It is a 20 volume set. Currently, only 15 have been compiled for Pocket Bible but the other 5 are forthcoming.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2004/20040419-ivpmatt.jpg" /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2004/20040419-ivprev.jpg" /><br /><br />If you want to take a look at exactly what is in this commentary, visit the <a href="http://bible.gospelcom.net/cgi-bin/webcommentary">Bible Gateway Commentary</a> page. They have 16 of the volumes online. Normally, the books are in the $18-20 range or $333 for the entire collection if you were to get the paper versions. Laridian has them for $8.99-$9.99 each or <a href="http://www.laridiansales.com/order/productpages/LBKIVPNTS01.asp?order_platform=ce&ring=apwzwtzws">$129.99 for all of them</a>. The remaining 5 are included in that price, so that works out to $6.50 each!<br /><br />Pocket Bible is sold separately at the Laridian site and you'll need at least one translation for it to work properly. They have translations ranging from free to $29.95. I estimate by the time you get all 20 volumes, it will require roughly 7.5MB of storage space. To put that in perspective, the <a href="http://www.laridiansales.com/order/productpages/LBKBKC001.asp?order_platform=ce&ring=apwzwtzws">Bible Knowledge Commentary</a> is 7.2MB and covers the <i>entire</i> Bible. The IVP will really be an in depth comprehensive study of the New Testament. <i>(Affiliate links)</i>

Pocket Bible is a great program. I use it in church all the time. (a great chance to show off the PPC)

For those who get involved in commentaries/the Bible, etc., this is a great deal. The search/lookup features on Pocket Bible are pretty fast. The interface is nice and you can look at two different books at one time.... i.e. the NIV on top and the KJV on bottom or this new commentary.

Wouldn't cost too much to try one out at that price!

I like Pocket Bible as well. I only wish it had a note taking interface. I used to use CE Bible and loved it note taking ability. I have tried to flip between Pocket Bible and Word, but it just does not work well. Also, CE Bible understood reference 'shortcuts'. I could double-tap a 'shortcut' and it would take me to the verse.

I wonder what became of CE Bible?

I'd like to know when Laridian are going to support VGA mode. A tab to switch between different books, verse selection like Olive Tree Bible reader (When you click on a book it only shows the actual chapters available, rather than a number pad) and the ability to have three books open at once would all be good to have, while they are updating the software. :D

But Pocket e-Sword (http://www.e-sword.net/pocketpc/index.html) is free.

They can be found at http://www.slsoftware.com/

It to is a great program, I have enjoyed using both CeBible and Lardian's program as well.

I use pocket word to take my notes all the time. Every Sunday morning I re-map two task buttons on my Jornada 568, one for my Bible program of choice and the other to pocket word, I then switch to landscape mode using Nyditot Virtual Display from http://www.nyditot.com/

Pocket e-Sword has the IVP Commentaries for free?

These commentaries certainly look impressive from an English 101 perspective (length!) :D

Has anyone spent quality time reading through any of these that could provide insight to the insightfulness and accuracy?

Thanks for letting us know about these Ed.

Yeah adding tabs to PocketBible sounds like a great idea, and there is a notes feature in PocketBible, but I think it's a little unintuitive, so I never really use it.

I'm really hoping they're working on compiling the NIV Study Bible notes for PocketBible, I'll pick that up in a heartbeat.

Not to sound like a goof, but I didn't realize people actually used these. Well, I guess it just proves the super usefulness of handheld computers from yet another angle. :)

Do you know that the current 2.x version of Pocket Bible has been around for FOUR YEARS now (it's release coincided with Microsoft's launch of Pocket PC back in the good old year 2000)?! Isn't it high time to release a new 3.x version that incorporates the user suggestions Laridian received over those years? Pocket Bible 2.0 has been a real hit at the time of its release, but it is getting outpaced by new innovative alternatives like Pocket e-Sword or QuickVerse. Come on, Laridian, time to dust off those programming skills and give us a great new version

I bought Laridian's PocketBible & Memorize, was given as a gift QuickVerse Life Application and have Pocket e-Sword. I'd rather read in Laridian, study in Pocket e-Sword (tabs & auto-syncs) and compare verses in QuickVerse. QuickVerse is nice, but the formatting is not too sweet (no bold print or clear type, but I do like the divider lines) and it is kind of quirky in keeping track of the daily readings or when you're jumping around. Laridian is very dependable and has great resources at a very reasonable cost. I like Pocket e-Sword's tab use vs. split screens, notes, compare and prayer module. Laridian's navigation is not up to the other two, but it always runs. I've tried some others as well, but these three are what I leave loaded. My experience in terms of speed at start up (all books on an SD card) on an e310: QV, Laridian, Pocket e-Sword. Some day I hope to learn what they'll do on an up to date ppc!

But Pocket e-Sword (http://www.e-sword.net/pocketpc/index.html) is free.
Pocket e-Sword has the IVP Commentaries for free?

E-sword is a freeware alternative to the pocket bible that is being discussed... which does also provide free commentaries (not IVP) among various iterations of the good book.

Love their motto:
"Without payment you have received; without payment you are to give." (Mat 10:8 ISV)

Too bad I don't read the good book. Zzzzz. :devilboy:

It's highly unfortunate that Pocket Bible doesn't have any authorized Catholic versions. True, they have the NRSV, which they advertise as an alternative (it has the deuterocanonical/apocryphal books) but the NRSV has more than a thousand "gender neutral paraphrases;" you don't have to be a chauvanist pig to wonder whether this constitutes good translation principle.

I use the OliveTree's expensive ($30) NAB, and I keep a KJV and Douay Rheims too. The high price isn't their fault; I think the license for the NAB isn't cheap.

Two other great non-gender-neutered-English Catholic Bibles are any RSV + deuterocanonical/apocrypha (or the RSV Catholic Edition, which is the same thing with minor changes) and the Jerusalem Bible, which is very stylistic.

Has anyone purchased and installed this? Go to one of your translations (I used the NIV) and go to John 17:21. Now, select View|Two Books, select the IVP. Tap on the NIV/translation to make it active, then View|Synchronize. Does the IVP go to the commentary on John 17 for you or does it go to a summary page - John 13-17?

Ed, does this have anything to do with Laridian posting an update for PocketBible for a glitch with it and the IVP?

Not in this particular case - I have the latest. This could be something quirky with my setup. I have sent them an email and am working on it but am just trying to get some other data points.

BTW to anyone else following this thread, this is a great commentary. I'd love to have something as detailed for the OT. I need an excuse to buy a 1GB SD Card.

I installed Pocket e-Sword, and it's really cool being able to compare the different translations...I wish there was an NIV version available for it though.

Ed,
How does the IVP compare to Bible Knowledge or Life Application notes?
Thanks. :?:

IVP Commentary is available on line at http://bible.gospelcom.net/cgi-bin/webcommentary. You can check it out there for comparison.

Or you can use a program like iSilo to convert the online version to off-line compressed e-books to carry on your Pocket PC. It will not integrate into Pocket Bible program, but it will save you some serious bucks :D

Anyone know where to get the NIV Study Bible notes? Or is Laridian working on converting that over?

Just keep in mind, that is not generally allowed by the site or the publishers that have generiously donated their text to that site.

Q. This is great! May I download the Bible Gateway contents?
A. In general, no. Most of the Bibles provided here on the Bible Gateway are made available by the generosity of the publishers. We are currently working on a "Download site" to provide some Bibles in a downloadable format. You are allowed to copy some Biblical material from the online Bibles, as long as you follow the copyright restrictions setforth by the publishers. See also this question (http://bible.gospelcom.net/help/?faq=24) for more information.
Don't make the publishers sorry they provided these resources. :D

I have the latest version of PB and the IVP and mine behaves the same as yours, Ed. It goes to a page in the IVP headed "Jesus Meets Privately with His Disciples prior to His Crucifixion" (13:1-17:26)

Must be an indexing glitch...

With the version just recently released, it works fine for me. PB Version 2.023 w/ Book Reader Engine 1.024.

I downloaded the new PB a few days ago and didn't think to check the IVP sync. John 17:21 works fine. I'll continue to test it out. Thanks for the heads up.

Ah, so there is *some* programming going on behind the scenes then. So - any word on the next significant update?
