Why is 63% Milk called 2% Milk?

The Prahl family has always had "Skim" milk (no fat), but every now and then someone buys 2% or whole milk. The label on the 2% jug states that it has "37% less fat than whole milk." So why isn't it called 63% milk? :|

Not a joke. I know it isn't 100% fat, but why is 2% milk 37% less fatty than "whole" milk? The numbers are confusing...

The 2% is 2% of the total amount of liquid.

The 37% means that out of the x grams of fat in whole milk, they took 37% out to get to the y amount that is in 2%

That's my theory. I see where your confusion was now, sorry about that :)

Isn't whole milk about 3% fat, so 2% would be about 1/3 less fat.

I thought whole milk was 4%.

iirc, the percentage refers to mass or volume (can't remember which). 2% milk is 2% of the total volume/mass being milk fat. So, according to pf, 2% milk would have 50% less fat than whole milk.
