WOW, perhaps the 512mb cards will get down to the sweet spot and become more affordable now, like 256mb are, considering the 2gig SD prototypes are already out.

You can get it for just over $383 from eCost: http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=354542

It's hard to believe that just 3 years ago it cost me $500 for a 1GB microdrive, and now we have solid-state memory for much less than that.

The price on 512 cards has already started to move, we have a 512 SD card $139 (http://www.mobileplanet.com/private/maximumpda/product.asp?dept_id=1446&pf_id=MP853711&src=IN415&mn) and you might also check Costco, they have some good deals as well on SD.

If you're going to look at Costco, you'll need to look under digital cameras, not PDA's for sd cards (512 MB $159)

So two 512 cards would cost me about $280 and one one gig card would cost me $380? Am I missing something here?

Single higher-capacity cards will ALWAYS cost more than two smaller cards.

Nice - I do like these periodic stock-takes where we stand back and see how much storage we can now get into our PPCs for the same price.

If it were just 2x + $50, I would seriously consider getting the 1GB card.

Forget about price. I just moved my 512MB CF into my iPAQ (from my digital camera -- I replaced it with a 256). Combine it with my 256 SD and I have 768 MB storage in my handheld! And I did own a 1 MB Palm.

Well, I have a 1Gb Cf and a 256SD card giving me one and quarter Gigs of storage.

Speed is the area I would now like to see some improvement on. Anyone played with one of those new Sandisk ultra SD cards?

It's surreal isn't it? I remember when I just had a 128 SD and thought "What could you possible need half-a-Gig of memory for???".

Now I'm looking at this new SD and thinking "Hmmmmm...." ;)

Where is Lexar with their cards.

You can get 2 GB CF cards now for $180 or so.

I recently paid about $160 for a 512 MB SD card. Four times less space as a CF card that costs $20 more.

Still much more bang for the buck with CF!

I wonder if people will have the same or more problems with it that they have had with other Sandisk SD cards?

The 1 GB SD cards lets our PDAudio record an hour and forty minutes of CD quality (linear PCM @ 16-bits/44.1 KS/s) on a Toshiba e755 or HP iPAQ h2215.

The h2215 with PDAudio-CF is the smallest digital audio recorder in the world, and finally, with the 1 GB SD card, it's able to record for an adequate interval.

Someone asked for faster SD cards. The PDA's SD interface is the speed bottleneck, not the card itself. See our benchmarks for details:

http://www.core-sound.com/CF-and-SD-mass-storage-comparison.html

So if you want faster performance, let the PDA manufacturers know.

By the way, the Toshiba e755's SD card interface is almost four times faster than the HP iPAQ h2215.

And combine it with that 3600mAh battery, and you could probably record many hours. :)

Ouch. 8O I'm sure they'll eventually optimize it, but I suspect HP doesn't view it as the "main bottleneck" in their devices right now. :|

Of course. The formfactor is larger. This is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.

Is it safe to assume that ANY 512MB and larger SD card will always be of the "10MB/sec" high speed type (assuming this is a distinct threshold category of much faster performance)?? But I didn't see this SanDisk press release making mention of the Ultra series name...

Speed is definitely a major factor for my card purchase, for all the coming devices requiring this kind of speed, such as the instant-startup continuous-shooting digicam I mentioned earlier:

They might offer 10 MB/sec in some applications but not in any PDA we've seen so far. The fastest SD card we've seen so far can be written to at only 1.2 MB/s in a Toshiba e755. All other cards and PDAs yield even slower rates.

See our Web site for benchmark results:

Thanks Len, I saw that, very informative.

I don't plan to buy separate SD cards for each device though, so the cards I buy are to be shared among all my SD devices. And it seems other non-PPC devices will be able to make use of (or even require) the potential of faster SD cards...?
