MiTAC launched their line of Mio devices in August 2002 and has since been aggressive in their launch of the Windows Mobile devices line of Pocket PCs and Smartphones. Their line of 'Mio Digital Walker' Pocket PCs and Smartphones has received much praise from the mobile community. Their clam-shell Smartphones are also well received.

Shane: What is MiTAC's mobile devices direction and strategy for the next two years?

Justine: In the next two years, MiTAC will be introducing more products into the Greater China market rolling out four Smartphones every two quarters and two Pocket PC's every year. Devices will be more powerful devices integrating different functions to target different segments of the market. "

The Mios are being sold in Israel and I have had the opportunity to review the Mio 558.

This is a real powerful device that no vendor would get ashamed of. The design is not stunning, but with wifi an BT it is a Pure Play Powerhouse. A colleague of mine reviewed the 339 with its camera and MP3 remote and got the same impression.

These are not the typical no- name Taiwanese "cheap and dirty" devices we used to know. It's a brand new league and can compete with the big guys with no problems at all.

Justine: Mio's approach is more personal. We continue to tailor our products to what the consumer wants as we receive constant feedback from consumers. We launched our Mio 338, without much advertisement. It is by word of mouth that resulted in our product being well received. At MiTAC, we believe that if you have a good product, it sells itself.

How can anyone, especially a PR manager, still believe this? In the case of a new market like pocketpc's, should they not be advertising just to educated potential consumers, who may now even know they exist, for one, and secondarily may not know a pocketpc would suite their needs.

I hope this attitude doesn't pervade the whole of this segment.

He just hit you with an ad line and you didn't realize that?

"our product is cool, it doesn't even need ad to make it flies off the shelf."

And if they didn't believe in advertising, why'd they have cooperated with PPCSG for a feature? :D
