:?:
I have a Belkin wifi-router connected to 2 boxes via wires (neither of the boxes is wireless) and I just got a D-link 802.11-b wi-fi CF card for my Ipaq 3660. I have cable for Internet acess. How do I configure my Ipaq to connect to the internet . It is not doing it automatically :?

Was there software specifically for PocketPCs included with the D-Link WiFi CF Card? If not, you could try using the default Compaq software, but I doubt that would work.

One other question, is your iPaq running PPC2000 or 2002?

Stormswift

it was included. As far as I can see the problem is that D-link CF wi-fi hangs the PocketPC explorer. I was able to log on to yahoo and then it hung

Hmm...so it's not a connection problem, it's a Windows CE problem. Can you browse websites when your PPC is cradled with your PC? If not, then I would ask Compaq/HP for help.

And you still didn't answer...
is your iPaq running PPC2000 or 2002?

I can still browse Internet from the cradle

Do you want me to help you or not? Do you have PPC2000 or PPC2002? Sheesh! 8O

Stormswift

actually I have both but I would like to connect IPAQ with the 2002 OS

Stormswift

Oh, I forgot to mention that IPAQ with the 2000 OS does not hang (it does not connect with D_link to the net either

Have you done a soft reset on either device yet? Was there an alternate driver included with the CF card (for PPC 2000)?

OSUKid7
11-30-2003, 11:56 PM
You have both? As in two iPaq 3660s? Eh...ok :?

With the one with PPC2002 on it, can you browse one of your networked PCs in File Explorer? And how were you able to log on to yahoo yet it crashes? Does it just crash on yahoo? How about http://mobile.msn.com? You might want to explain a little more about your situation. :|

And yes...do try doing a soft reset...maybe several times.

I can't see it in my PC browser. I do not have a wireless PC card for the 2 of them to connect wirelessly. The IPAQ should be connecting to the router directly, no? Iwas not looking to connect IPAQ to the computer. Active sync does that for me and I do not always want to have to turn my desctop on . I want to turn on the IPAQ and surf the net (in whatever limited way that can be done).
I re-set it about a dozen times. The other device is a 3635 with 200O OS (a hand-me-down)

Do you know what a router does? I'm assuming your Router is also a hub/switch...well, since your computers are connected to that, and your iPaq is (wirelessly) connected to that, viola, you should be able to browse your computers from your iPaq. I know you might not want to do this, but this is an easy way to test where the problem is.
Once again, you didn't answer my question. Do you even want help? Or should I just let you waste your money with a pos wifi card that doesn't work?
Read my last post, I'm getting annoyed at retyping everything twice.

Calm down, OSUKid7! We're trying to help him, remember?

Stormswift, go into your router settings and make sure that your wireless is turned on and WEP (encryption) is turned off. You might also want to reboot your router, for good measure. Just unplug it for a minute or two.

Have you done a soft reset on either of your PPCs? I'd suggest following OSUKid7's advice above, and if that doesn't work try re-installing the drivers for your wireless card.

This may sound like the venerable "reboot the machine" routine, but it usually works! Let us know what happens and include more detail, please.

LOL...hey, if you were trying to help someone and he didn't even listen, I bet you'd be annoyed too. :?

But anyway, he says he was able to log onto yahoo, so I doubt anything is wrong with the router.

I would not be positng here if I did not need help. Please be nice. Getting the network to connect with one of the machines being nearly dead (no newtwork for 6 month and no Active stinc for over a year) that was difficult. now the card is not working and I do need help

OSUKid7

You wouldn't be posting here if you didn't need help...that says a lot. :|

Kinda wonder why I'm posting here then...I don't need help

I am checking router settings and it appearts to see the wi-fi CF Card - it lists its MAC address. The encryption WEP is off. I"ll check the rest and post

OSUKid7
12-01-2003, 01:14 AM
Yeah, obviously the router's seeing the iPaq...I mean, you were able to log on to yahoo, right? (btw you still haven't answered my other question)...does it always lock up IE? just on yahoo? how about local html pages on your PPC?

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 01:22 AM
I canot get to other pages. I do not know now if IPAQ had Yahoo page archived or somehting - I was not looking at the address bar.
It does alwasy lock up. Actually since I pluged in the CF card the whole IPAQ is running much slower.

OSUKid7
12-01-2003, 01:25 AM
how about local html pages on your PPC?

sheesh...so can you even open Pocket IE without it freezing? With or without the CF Card in? With or without the CF Sleve on?

David Prahl
12-01-2003, 01:43 AM
What version is the driver for the wireless card? If you're using a 2003 driver on 2002 and 2000 machines, that might lock 'em up.

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 01:46 AM
OK, I did not answer one of your questions. It does not always lock up local pages. If CF wi-fi card is out - no problem. When it is in - padlock city

OSUKid7

Can you use any other Internet apps on your PPC over WiFi? Such as AIM or MSN Messenger?

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 02:04 AM
OK, the lock up problem is solved: that'll teach me to read documentation. I needed at least 32 mb of main memory. Stack overflow (if that what it was )stopped as soon as I freed up the memory. I can now access local content but for example I was able via active sync to actually log on to yahoo account. Now it says something about page not being available

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 02:05 AM
I just tried AIM - no go. Now it looks like purely connection issue

David Prahl
12-01-2003, 02:08 AM
Good! Almost there!

Sometimes it takes my PPC a while to "get used to my network" after being away for a while. Soft reset (again). Plug in your card and make sure it's getting a good signal, and then leave it alone for a few minutes.

How about that?

OSUKid7
12-01-2003, 02:08 AM
Purely? as in the Pocket IE problems are solved?

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 02:08 AM
spoke too soon. It locked up on me again

OSUKid7
12-01-2003, 02:13 AM
Hmm...do you have any other device (laptop?) with WiFi that you can test your WiFi connection? Because if another device has the same problems with connecting to the network/Internet, then it's the router's problem, and not neccessarily the PPC's.

Stormswift

Router is what I am worried about.....I wonder if htat is the reason for all of the problems. It seems to work OK with 2 desktops wired to it but yestarday I could not connect to the network or Internet wtih a wifi internal adapter card. Took the card back to the store today. I would hate for it to be a router....to have to re-install and reconfigure the whole network.....

David Prahl
12-01-2003, 02:25 AM
I strongly suggest you unplug the router for a few minutes. Often the lower end routers get "clogged up" every few weeks or months, and this helps them out.

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 02:26 AM
OK, I'll try it even though I just installed it yesterday

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 02:35 AM
By the way, if I unplug it, will it retain all ot the settings or am I looking at the rest of the night configuring that gizmo?

David Prahl
12-01-2003, 03:34 AM
YES, ALL SETTINGS WILL BE LOST (I THINK). BETTER CHECK YOUR MANUAL.

What configurations have you made? Most routers can be plugged in and need zero config.

As far as I know I only connnected computers and played with the cables (trial and error ) untill all of sudden everything worked. Trust me it was not because I did or did not follow instructions. It just made no sence....then the active synk all of sudden connected through the serial port (it didn't before). Why all started working? I do not know..

Here is where I am now: AIM is working nPOP is able to check e-mail. All this without re-setting the router. That will be the next step :-(

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 04:29 AM
Oh, and the IE sometimes works and sometimes does not

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 06:11 AM
I can't believe it: it was the software conflict....Everything is working once I removed a battery meeter (fortunately it was a freebie). This is TOTAL ID10T moment on my part. I knew something was overwlowing memory and I Still wasn't "getting it".

I did not have to re-set the router, thanfully.

Guys, thank you for sticking with me on this. Now I can surf the net anywhere in my house. With an active 2 1/2 year old who is on "seek and destroy mission" and needs his mommy to pull him off the fridge every five minutes - this is way cool!!!! My girlfriends will die of envy!!!!
(yeah, I am a "she"")

OSUKid7
12-01-2003, 12:58 PM
OK, now that everything's working, I would suggest you enable WEP. Even though that isn't 100% secure, you're just asking for someone to "borrow" your connection - or worse - if you don't enable it. Believe me...my two next door neighbors and the ppl who live behind me all have un-WEPed WiFi...I don't use their connections much since I have my own, but I have gone and poked around a bit.

Stormswift
12-01-2003, 02:11 PM
thank you for the warning. I will enable WEP (Iassume it should be on both router (Pocket PC?)
I am typing this while getting redy for work!!! This is so cool. By the way, How do you deternine if there other networks in your area?
I recall something called mini-stumbler? It was a long time ago and I just don't remember...
Thanks again
