I have a Toshiba E750 and I am having a bit of a problem when trying to record meetings. I am using the Vito Sound Recorder with a .wav file bit rate but I am getting drop out from the people further away. I wish they had a mic jack.

Yeah, I agree that would be nice - I have yet to see a Pocket PC with that yet. They need to evolve more towards "laptop killers", which they are still a little far from.

Speaking of which, I am managing to persuade my dad to buy a Pocket PC to go with his laptop, hes a business man and he loves the feature of syncing outlook, a feature that he commonly uses. We have a parterniship with Microsoft and everything he uses is Microsoft, and the 2003 Windows Mobile is excellent, and he loves the bluetooth wireless feature I have going on in the house with my 2215 :D

Actually the E750 has a mic jack: "Stereo headphone/Microphone port (Stereo; 4 ring jack 3.5mm)" (http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/pc/pc_prodDetail.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1370962629.1064984594@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccchadcjhmdikehcgfkceghdgngdglj.0&comm=CS&plin=Toshiba%20Pocket%20PC&pfam=Toshiba%20Pocket%20PC%20e750%20Series&poid=254599&Adoid=380602).
You simply use the same jack as you use for headphones. I've only tried it with a very old/cheap/low quality mic, so I can't tell you how the results of using it would be.

See, all you have to do is read the instructions! One of these days I think that before I use something I just might do that. :D It actually worked when I pugged a standard mic into the jack and recorded inside an office. I am going to try and omni directional mike made specifically for recording in large rooms and then see which bit rate would be best. Hopefully if I have a better mic it won't matter what rate I use and then I can get more time on a smaller SD card.

Thanks prismejon for the info!

Just a quick note to anyone interested. The iPaq 5450/5455 also has this feature (I presume the 5550/5555 has it too). It's nice to be able to plug my good mic in the record lectures. :)

Actually the E750 has a mic jack...

Ah, I should have known that. Never owned one of the high-end Toshiba devices. The old Compaq Aero Palm-size PC had a similar setup...

You know, one of these days I should really read the manual that comes with my Pocket PC.

No problem! Please give a report of how the quality is with a good mic :)

Is that a stereo or mono input? I don't think anyone ever got it to work on the 54xx/5xx series. It was apparently designed for the GSM/GPRS version that never came out.

I'm testing an E800, wonder if it has that line-in too...

Hmm thats interesting, I read loads of things about the 5450 and they said it couldn't be done. I'll have to give it a try :!:

If you want to record very high quality audio with a PDA, have a look at our PDAudio system:

Not sure whether this helps or not, but I'm using Vito's SoundExplorer v3.44 with excellent results. (Is Vito Sound Recorder an old version of their recording program?).

I have a lowly iPAQ 1910, but the mic on that unit (with gain turned on) does an excellent job of picking up voices. In fact, the mic setting (on the iPAQ Settings) allows you choose short range, normal, and conference settings. I wouldn't like having to use an external mic, and I'm glad that I don't need to with my current set-up.

E.g., maybe the mic on your Toshiba is not at fault...maybe it's the internal settings and/or software you're using that's a culprit?
