Im trying to use a laptop and pda over my t68i mobile phone using GSMR (or is that GPSR?..anyways). the problem is I have 10 megs per month and it is super costly if I go over that. If im browsing in text mode useing the built in browser and wml proxy servers its compatabile with, pages take minimal kilobytes, but if I use a regular browser, even if I dont load images, html alone can take anywhere from 50-100 Kbytes per page on most Heavily outfitted websites. this is way beyond unacceptable. has anyone found or read of any solutions from people in the same predicament? I've looked at some proxy servers that specialise in the http 1.1 compression feature, but they have generaly been unusable because you need a non windows system, or you had to compile it yourself. (and of course it didnt compile correctly to boot)

Turning images off seems to prevent them from being downloaded. To turn images off, use the fifth icon in the Pocket IE tool bar (usually the right-most icon, unless you're using a PIE add-in). If you find you need an image, you can tap-and-hold the placeholder and select Show Picture.

Yes, I know it kind of defeats the purpose of the Web, but you'll get smaller, faster Web pages.

pony, you didnt read it all,

but if I use a regular browser, even if I dont load images

I allready dont load images.. its the html that still takes 50-100kbytes. thats what i want to reduce the size of.

You're right, I missed that detail. All I can say in my defense is that was a pretty big block of text; using paragraphs would have made it easier to digest. :-)

I don't have any help, I guess. All I could suggest is getting one of those unlimited data plans for $100 per month, but that didn't sound like an option. What service provider are you using?

Another thing that might help is giving more details about what you're browsing. Even at 100K per Web page, that would allow you to check 100 pages per month. That works out to three per day if you just want to check headlines and you do it seven days a week. How much browsing do you plan on doing?

well I might have a slightly working solution now, and luckly I dont need to run anything special. Pocket IE actually does something right, it supports WML. Knowing that, I can goto www.google.com/wml and use their proxy to view web pages in a form that take little data flow. its escentialy the same content as on phones, but I get more info on one page. Not all sites are friendly with it however. One of my favorit sites to check all day, fark.com, seems incompatible in that you can access the many navigator bars, but you can't see the actual headliner submissions which is the "content" of the site.

Also it dosnt look like googles proxy allowes images of any kind. maybe theres other public wml proxies I can look for.
