Hi,

I am a new user. I have ripped some of my DVDs to <200mb files. I have just got a new 256Mb CF card. My problem is that I can't copy the files to the card!! I explore the mobile device and drag the file into the CF folder. It starts to copy but gets 7 progress bars into the process then goes back to the beginning of the progress bar!!! This is really frustrating!

I wonder if it is a known problem or if I have a dodgy card. I have managed to copy a 40Mb video file to the card but I couldn't play it (I think it was encoded witht the wrong codec as I could only hear sound).

Does anyone have any advice?

I think ActiveSync is not very good at copying large files. You should get a cheap USB CF reader and copy the files through that.

Is this true? Does that mean everyone here who uses there PPC for movies has to do this??

I don't know but I will agree that card readers are cheap even by my standards, I got my SD card reader for $20. If you want one of those fancy 6 in 1 readers that will be a bit more though :)

Most people do use USB readers. First off, they're not expensive - you can get them for under $30. Second, they're much, much faster than ActiveSync -- you can probably copy a whole movie in a few minutes. Third, I have read scattered reports on trouble copying large files through ActiveSync. I don't know if this is a known issue or if no one has the patience to do it anymore. ;)

I have a reader, but I don't use it - I xfer all of my movies via WiFi (through ActiveSync) and haven't had a problem. Plus, it's quite a bit faster than USB. :D If you've got a WiFi card, you might want to try that...

Yup, USB readers are the file transfer method of choice!

I never use ActiveSync to move any files that are at least 1MB in size (unless it's an install file in which I have no choice). As mentioned, ActiveSync in WiFi (or standard Ethernet) is BLAZING fast, but in serial mode (USB, BT, Serial), ActiveSync crawls.

Active Sync always shows the progress bar going back to zero. However, its not really at 0. If you are copying a large file thru ActiveSync, just leave it alone! Go shopping, work out at the gym, make a sub sandwich, and then when you come back, it will be done!

Hope that helps!

Um...maybe, if you have a distant cousin in another state to visit, you might do that too just to make sure :razzing:

I think the last time I tried loading w/ activesync, a 200mb ish movie took about half a day.

Yeah, that's "proof positive" to me that a $20 USB reader is well the cost. It's worth the half a day you'd lose just trying to copy such a file once via AS...

...of course, maybe this is good preventative measure against RSI ...forces people away from their computer. :|

Thanks for the advice everyone - glad to know its not just me! I'm off to buy a card reader!
