Hi, I have an iPAQ h3630 with the PPC2002 Update installed.
I used to have many problems with the power, if i press it on the bottom, the PDA just do a Hard Reset.

So, a few days ago i just got tired and i desarmed it.

When i found the problem (some contact was to dirty), when i put every thing in it old position, and try to restart it, I saw (for a while) a bird on the screen.

Was blue and red bird, with some areas in white. The backligt was off.

Has anyone saw this? or know what it means?

Oh, after a soft reset, i get my pda working as new!

maybe it's the iPAQ soul, bringing your iPAQ back to live

You have recieved the so-called "Parrot of Death". It is rumored to be used as a test pattern during manufacturing. You get the POD by either performing a failed ROM update or[THIS COULD RENDER THE IPAQ USELESS] pressing and releasing the action pad while resetting the device.

This is a late parrot, it has ceased to be.

It will never render the iPaq useless, but it could trigger a hard reset.

As others have mentioned, this is the special bootloader mode of the 36xx units. The reason it's a parrot is because the HTC codename of the device was the "Macaw". While you're in this mode, you could hook up a serial cable and use a terminal emulator like HyperTerminal to do all sorts of interesting low-level things to your iPaq.

Usually, a soft-reset will leave the bootloader and relaunch the WinCE OS.

It would render the device useless by disrupting the ROM. A hard reset will not affect the ROM. I disrupted my ROM once when my file store dissaperaed. A hard reset did nothing to fix the problem. I had to reload ROM 1.20 from the desktop. I suppose the ROM could get seriously disrupted and not even accept a ROM upgrade.

I read that the POD was used in manufacturing. The bird displays many colors, so it would be easy to see if the video controller was mapped correctly to the display input.

Weird. You must have had a 37xx unit then... the 36xx units didn't have a file store. I guess I could see it affecting the file store, but apart from that the bootloader is actually a pretty simple thing, and I'm pretty sure it's safe on the 36xx units. Thanks for the warning, though.

I don't have either a 36xx or 37xx series. I have never got this bird, but I read about it once. My 3830 had the disrupted file store.

Ahhh! OK, then we're talking apples and oranges. I feel better now. I was specifically referring to the Macaw bootloader only on the 36xx and 37xx units. The 38xx is a completely different beast... and the file store is a well-known problem with it. :(

My point remains that on the 36xx and 37xx units you can boot into the parrot without any permanent damage - but you may suffer a hard reset.

Just a curious question

Does anyone know the bootloader for the 3800s?

Also, does anyone know the bootloader of the h54XX?
