Greetings from the newest Axim afficianado! My dear husband bought me an Axim for Christmas...boy did he ever score BIG points in the love bank!

Question...AvantGo is registered and working...but not really working. When I click on the AvantGo icon, nothing shows up. However, if I look at my AvantGo channels in the folder at the bottom of "Shop" in Reader (does that make sense?), my selected channels are downloading and I can read them. Any idea what I'm doing wrong...or is this just how it works?

Hmm, I honestly can't follow along. I've been trying to think of what you could be doing, but I can't tell ya. Best advice I can give you in the long run: Switch to the free text version of Mazingo. http://mazingo.net/pc/text_service_signup.php You'll be better off for it anyhow, and since you haven't really got started with AvantGo yet the switch will be easier.

Polly,

Welcome aboard. I had a similar problem. I had read on this forum that people have been having problems with XP because it has Active sync 3.6 and that doesnt have the drivers for the axim. I uninstalled my existing version of active sync and installed from the Dell disk. This worked for me. I tried Mazingo and didn't like it as much as avant-go, but that is just my preference. Either way, make the decision based on content, don't settle for one because you couldn't get the other to work. Good luck.

Looks to me like an AvantGo issue instead of ActiveSync, but none the less worth looking at. Is everything else syncing ok?

Polly, Avantgo isn't a program on the Pocket PC, it is a location within Pocket Internet Explorer, so launch that. The Avantgo icon on the Pocket PC is to manually sync if you have a WiFi card or modem.

On the desktop, is Avantgo checked in ActiveSync under Tools|Options?

This is not really a solution...but I agree that Mazingo is a better choice..I never looked back

By the way...is there a way to uninstall avantgo completly of your PPC?

By my count, two people have claimed that Mazingo is better. Why? For the bandwidth challenged consumer, which service would you recommend? I have a dial-up modem and tried both. However, I have been using AvantGo since my Palm days and I feel that since the file sizes are generally smaller it is better for my connection.

AvantGo has two bandwith advantages over Mazingo. The first is caching - The AvantGo servers will cache some content (based on the content provider's specifactions) which should speed up downloading. Second, AvantGo does reduce the size of the files as it downloads them (removing unnecessary HTML).

Last time I checked, Mazingo did not offer these features. Still Mazingo does allow you to choose when and if you sync. By using this efficiently, you will only update when you choose. You can manage AvantGo in a similar way, but it is much less user friendly.

It all comes down to personal preference. I use AvantGo daily and Mazingo once every few months.

Personally I just care less about bandwidth... pulling down 4 - 4.5 megabit really stops that pretty quickly. :) It's all about the content. AvantGo really didn't give me what I wanted, and it brought too many problems and limitations.

Not when you are in a hotel over a 56K modem or an even slower GPRS connection.

Ed...you were right! :D I didn't understand that one is to read their channels through Internet Explorer, not through AvantGo. I launched IE and voila! There were my channels. Thanks!

Off the subject a bit...

I have used both. And while there are a few channels I like on Mazingo... I have had nothing but trouble with it. And most of the channels open better not in the mazingo program, but in IE.

Avantgo always works... everytime. Mazingo I now have to manualy sync. I have no idea why, but it only sync's manualy... It says it sync's, and it sync's fast, but it don't so I do it manualy. With 4 channels it takes twice as long to sync Mazingo than my entire activesync settings WITH 10 Avantgo channels... One used to be on Mazingo, now with both, I go with the Avantgo version now.

It's a personal choice though, and I personaly like Avantgo better. :D

Cool. I've been using it since 1998 and it just makes sense to me, but now that I think about it, if you didn't know Avantgo channels were in Pocket IE, there is nothing obvious telling you that.

Glad your off and running. :D

Well, that's certainly stretching it.

Palm opens AvantGo directly, seeing as how there is no PIE. It took me a while to figure out where AG was as well my first time with a PPC.
