http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=5644

The specs on the Dell Pocket PC are in if this article is correct. This device seems a bit heavier and thicker than I would have suspected, but it seems to have integrated CF and SD slots, so maybe the size isn't too far out of line. Also has integrated bluetooth. Given these specs, I don't see this as a $299 PDA, but now that ViewSonic has entered with a $300 device, the Pocket PC seems to have the mid-level to high end market covered. Sorry, no pics yet. It could launch as soon as November 5.

Weight: 6.5 oz
Thickness: 0.7" thin
Look: Silver with rubber sides, jog dial
Display: 240x320 pixel screen
Memory: 64Mb
Expansion: CF and SD slots
Connectivity: IRDA, Bluetooth and WiFI via CF slot
Music: MP3 player and universal remote control software
Energy: Removable battery (hi capacity option)
Holder: USB cradle (with spare battery charging slot)
Batteries: Batteries are 1440mwh and 3400mwh

Seems like a great power user device. If they are anything under $500, this will put all PDA makers on notice: Dell is in the PDA market! Source: Jaxbulls

yes, but does it have a transflective screen? ;)

I wonder if it has SD I/0. I can get by without the tft screen. Although I would prefer a Ipaq size screen. Hmm..time to find a buyer for my 3835.

Knowing Dell..They'll sell these things cheap. Hopefully $299!

Connectivity: IRDA, Bluetooth and WiFI via CF slot

Which can also be parsed as including IRDA but Bluetooth and WiFi are via the CF slot.

Very true. We'll have to wait for more details.

I know it fits the story, but do we really need the picture of Steven on the front page of the site? I spend enough time flipping channels trying to avoid that moron. At least he isn't speaking here, and that is good.

Did I miss the processor somewhere? There is no doubt Dell is gunning for HP on all fronts, PC's,servers, printers, and now Handhelds.....

IF i remember correctly, this is going to be a sub-$300 device, I can't find the link, but The Reg and a couple of other pages were touting Dell was targeting the lower-end markets.

If these specs are accurate, then I would seriously doubt the unit will be priced at $299. At least $499 is my guess.

Energy: Removable battery (hi capacity option)
Holder: USB cradle (with spare battery charging slot)

Sod the screen and the cpu - not really but you get the drift. That has to be the most convenient item mentioned.

I currently don't drive as I live right in the centre of London. As I don't drive my battery management has gone to hell in a handbasket for my phone.

I have however sorted the problem out on my current phone. I have R520 which sits in a nice desk stand with a spare battery. I never charge the battery in the phone anymore, unless travelling. I simply swap the batteries over when it needs charging. The upshot of which is my phone is always close to fully charged. Being able to do the same on ppc really rocks.

The only problem is Ericsson have stopped doing the stand for newer phones so I am stuck with the 520 and refuse to upgrade to a T68 for purely that reason.

EDIT - Is it my sick mind or does the photo look like a publicity shot for some porno movie? Definitely needs a caption competition.

With specs more than Ipaq, I myself am willing to pay $500-$650 for a device that is reliable and has all that I'm looking for in a PPC. ie removable battery, CF and SD slot, cradle with room for extra battery is a good start.

well this is just too boring!

i've heard from an incredibly deep and well placed source that the new device will bet in fact $399, and have
a 4 inch ultrabright supertransfrlective vga screen
128 mb ram
"the thinnest PocketPC to date" - he did not know the exact thickness, but slightly thinner than the toshiba he thought.
dual SD, CF
new patented Extended Battery Technology, 18-24 hours continuous use without backlight on, 12-14 hours with backlight full on.
built in Bluetooth and WiFi and fast IR

Could anyone draw up a mock and post it?
This machine will kill Palm once and for all!

Heck, why don't we throw in a 2GHz processor too, retina scan and food-calorie scanner.

sorry to disappoint, but only 400 mhz xscale. oh well.
i believe retina scans may be available to vertical markets. i think the food thing would have to be aftermarket.

One of the things the article seemed to say pointedly that Dell was shopping around to many different makers that could produce it at a low cost, Look at the Maestro and the cost it has come down to, with newer resource costs its possible since it doesn't have built-in wireless like most others.

A few things to consider:

1 - We forget now that low prices have become so commonplace in the PC world but Dell initially dropped the price of PCs a good $150 below the equivalent PC from other manufacturers when they decided to wage a "price war"

2 - Something caused all but one manufacturer turn their back on Dell because they felt the price point couldn't be met.

3 - Dell makes their money on volume not on high markups

4 - In no article I have ever seen has a "high end" device been mentioned.

Those facts taken in to consideration, I think this very well may be Dell's $299 device.

It was the specs that had me label it as high end. 64MB, SD and CF, bluetooth (integrated or CF though? Could read either way)

But it is dell. Could be all that and $299. :)

Dual slots for $300? Now, that would really kick.

The CF slot would draw a LOT of low end users who would love the possibility of adding memory for half what SD/MMC cost. Who wants to spend $300 on a new Tosh, Ipaq, or Viewsonic and dish out another $70 for a 128 meg card when you could have 256meg CF for $80.

But if the screen of the ViewSonic is really as rich as the Ipaq 3900s.

What a Christmas!

Low end users are not the only one. I have avoided the Ipaq like the plague pretty much because it does not have an integrate CF slot. I use CF all of the time and don't want the bulk of the sleeve. I stick with my HP568 pretty much because of that.

Not to mention the integreated remote :D

Now all that we can hope for in an XScale 400 and I think that HP/Compaq had better watch their back.

Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday to us!

Dudes, I love the screen on my IPAQ 3970. ActiveStink over Bluetooth was very cool (Ambicom USB BT adapter on my desktop). Now if someone would come out with a decent flip cover!!!

Anyway, I rarely use my Jornada any more...and hey, you know what? Most software really works (for the first time ever).

So until someone comes out with a thinner, CF and SD, with 39xx-style TFT, removable battery, and a connector that fits the already available Stowaways...I ain't changin'

If DELL comes out with a very competitve price they will surely take out a chunk of the market and most of them will be Palm users if the price will be in the 300$ range.

I will be definately be waiting on what will be the next device. I just want better battery life, 6-7hrs with backlight, integrated Wi-FI and BT, integrated SD and CF, good display ala 39xx and 128MB ROM.

What's with the "Batteries are 1440mwh and 3400mwh"...

Don't we measure the batteries in mAh? 3400 seems rather huge consider the largest right now are only 2100. (not complaining though...more battery, happier me)

I don't know if you're in TX, but Time Warner Cable/Road Runner has been showing a bunch of TV ads with some guy named Michael Garfield (sp?), the "high tech Texan". I'm sure the guy is cool in real life and all, but the promos are, well, kinda lame (you have to see them yourself)...

I think it would be possible.

I thinktheir using batteries in parallel configuration. This would mean that you retain the same voltage while increasing mAh ratings.

The Pocket LOOX comes with a 1500 mAh and a 1400mAh battery... I don't know which is the add on but it totals to 2900mAh... and that is not bad.

If I remember correctly, isn't the Toshiba e740's hi-capacity battery clip-on something like 3000 or 3300 or 3400 mAh? You know, the one you can already find at your local CompUSA...

Question. From the article in the inquirer, I don't see it mentioning that
its a pocketpc (unless i'm blind of course). Unless there is another article
sayings its a PPC. Or are we just speculating???

It doesn't say, but with those specs, it can only be a Pocket PC or a Linux device. My understanding of the Palm OS5 system is it can still only use 16MB of RAM. I don't know if that is OS5 specifically or for the OS4.x PACE environment. That is why the new Sony NX70 still only has 16MB.
