View Full Version : Activesuck only logging on as guest

Let me start by saying  . I got the Ipaq 3765 to use for my job in carrying the 3,000 plus contacts with me on the go. For two weeks I sailed in seventh heaven wondering how I lived without such a marvelous invention of human ingenuity. Then it happened. Without warning, Activesuck no longer would let me synchronize with a profile. I would park the beast into the cradle and "Guest" would initiate. Nothing else. I decided to look it up online to see if others have been perplexed with my problem and to my surprise many have. I also found an article from Microsuck that said if you change profiles on the same device you must perform a soft reset before you sync again. Well that is their pathetic attempt at providing a BS answer to a big problem so they can say they addressed it. Thinking I would have more luck talking to somone from Tech support about it, I called them. Even though Microsoft created the program they don't offer support on it. I was told to contact Compaq and take it up with them. Four case numbers later, I still don't have a resolution to the problem. They act as if it is the first time they have heard of the problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled activesuck a minimum of five times and soft reset my device countless times. Thinking I had everything to lose at this point, I backed up my device and did a hard reset at the suggestion of Compaq. I also took the liberty of removing all info from my desktop registry to be safe before re=installing activesuck. I don't need to tell you the rest of the story, because it is pretty much like you expect. Add the fact that I can't restore my backup to the mix because of some corruption to the file and that completes my saga.
I am frustrated beyond belief and need a resolution to this. Can anyone help? Oh did I mention I also talked my boss into buying one just a week after I bought mine and now he is experiencing the same problem.
Please help if you know anything and get back to me.

It's fairl rare, but not unheard for this to happen - have you tried deleting the partnership and re-creating it?

It was one of the first things I tried. I tried it several times. I can delete the partnership and synchronize one time but then the next time I dock it does it as a guest. Even then, I cannot get my outlook to synchronize because it says I have to restart my system before it can.

Ouch, that's ugly. Sounds like something on the iPAQ is screwed up - time for a hard reset!

Nope, try again. Been there done that already. I would think it is the Ipaq but like I said, my boss has the 3800 and it is doing the same thing. I have literally tried everything I know of to make this work. By the way, hard reset is Compaq's solution to something they can't figure out. That is how I ended up doing that.

This is exactly the problem I am experiencing now on my 3850. I sync with two PC's - work via serial (Windows NT system) and home via USB (Windows XP system). I have been happily existing like this for about 5 months...then I decided to upgrade to the new ROM image! Everything installed successfully and was working fine at home. It also works fine on my work PC, but only for the first sync (sound familiar???). After this the device (or Activesync) fails to recognise the partnership and I can only log in as "Guest". Have tried hard and soft re-setting, but no help. I have also tried just setting up one partnership with my work PC (not with home as well) and I still have the proble. I haven't upgraded any software or the OS on either of my machines in the last 4 months. Any clues???........................HELP!!!!

I had a few problems with my 3650 similar to the ones being described here.
I found that removing all other devices from the USB ports was the first step. The iPAQs seem to be really sensitive to that for some reason. If you have a serial cradle available to you, you can try that. If it works with serial, then the problem is something to do with the USB system on the host computer. There are certain USB controllers that the iPAQ doesn't work well with... or so Compaq tech cupport told me.
Second, I removed Activesync, ran reg-edit and deleted all references to Activesync I could find. Sorry, but it was a year or so ago and I don't remember all the keys I removed to get this to work. Removing the program doesn't remove all registry entries for some reason.
I then did a hard reset on the iPAQ.
Finally, I reinstalled Activesync and then plugged the iPAQ in. It connected and everything was fine and happy.
I'm not sure if that will help you out... but I wish you good luck!

I had this problem but I found a relatively easy fix - I think it was a registry edit...if only I could find the relevant bit to change...
There is a MS Kbase article on this about a corrupt or missing REPL.DAT file...

Aaah, here it is ...good ol' Chris de Herrera has an article on this in his FAQs about undocumented ActiveSync keys.

Tweaking this registry setting should fix things for ya - it worked for me.

Cor and there was me thinking I was unique! I too have this problem. It is driving me mad as it has happened to my work partnership and I am absolutely lost with a pda. Note I did not say IPAQ. I found that my psion5 was much better in that at least in did not screw up like this.
for the record I have a 3970! so it isn't ROM upgrades etc the only thing I can put it down to is uninstalling the laplink synch software. I did this because Compaq will not support my companies choice of software win 98 and office 97 so inbox did not work on synch. all of a sudden after five months of trouble free use I am a guest in my own home!!
this sucks and compaq need to sort this £600 is too much to pay for a paper weight.
I have tried them all by the way soft and hard reset reinstall them all delete profiles everthing even activ synch 3.6 all to no avail and compaq just say well it must be office 97 cos we don't support that.

I've been fighting this problem for the last couple of days, in my situation, I'm dialing into the desktop using RAS ...
Sometimes I get it to work, but I can't figure out exactly what it is, despite doing things one at a time... it seems to be something different that fixes it everytime... which probably means its not me that fixes it...
I found that disabling the LAN connection on the desktop before trying to connect the handheld fixed it once or twice. Running "regsvr32 msxml3.dll" in command prompt might fix it, but I think you need to install Internet Explorer 6.0 to even have this dll.
Also enabling the Guest user account on the windows 2K desktop PC seemed to fix it one time for me...
I need this to work because I have some software ported to Pocket PC, that relies on ActiveSync and RAPI to work reliably everytime the Pocket PC is synced, if I can't discover a process that makes it work everytime, then I will be recommending customers to use PalmOS, where we've never experienced such ridiculous troubles.

For what it's worth, I had this problem for 2 weeks.
It would only connect as guest, unless I deleted all partnerships and recreated a new one. It would then sync fine, but once you unhooked it, it would never work again. (rinse and repeat)
I tried soft resets,
hard resets followed by restoration of backup from SD,
hard resets followed by restoration of backup from PC,
installing IE6SP1,
reinstalling AS 3.5,
installing AS 3.6,
installing AS 3.1,
a variety of registry hacks and cleaning.
Nothing worked. Today I got extra desperate and hard reset my PPC (it's a Toshiba e310 btw) and reinstalled all my apps one by one, and picked up contact and meeting data from Outlook. I didn't restore any backups or anything.
AND... It seems to be working so far.
I think that my problems started when I renamed my PPC from "Pocket_PC" to something else. I think that the partnership between my PC and PPC got royally stuffed somewhere.
Anyway, so far so good. Good luck to all my fellow sufferers. :)
Daniel
P.S. It's weird how much stuff you realise you don't need when you are reinstalling all your apps.

I found that after disabling the LAN connection on the desktop PC, ActiveSync connects to the Pocket PC with its correct username everytime.
But whenever the LAN is enabled, ActiveSync connects to the PocketPC as Guest.
I thought this might be some kind of routing problem - route print shows the gateway IP as 127.0.0.1 (the loopback address) for the Pocket PC IP ( 192.168.55.100, regardless of the LAN connection.
Maybe there is some kind of authentication issue - perhaps the Pocket PC is attempting to authenticate the RAS user on the LAN domain? I've had ActiveSync working fine on the same PC before with the LAN enabled, so I'm really starting to bang my head. :x

It looks like running: regsvr32 msxml.dll fixes the problem on machines that fail when you run: regsvr32 msxml3.dll. :?
