What I find most interesting, beyond the claimed compression improvements, is the fact that the playbackl client is a 20 KB Java applet. Perhaps Java isn't so useless after all. ;-)<br /><br />"Finnish developer Oplayo has been demonstrating a compression technology at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes which, says the company, is up to ten times faster for delivering audio and video to mobile devices than MPEG-4. <br /><br />Baptised MVQ (which stands for Motion Vector Quantization), the technology enables extremely light video decoding that requires a low processing power at the receiving end, making it suitable for wireless devices. Instead of using a plug-in, or a player as is the case with both Microsoft and RealNetworks technologies, Oplayo's MVQ uses a 20KB Java applet that can be transmitted to a PC, PDA or phone along with the video package. I could be mistaken, but I'm 99% sure that the goal of MPEG4 is *not* to be a small download - instead the goal is for compressed video and audio at DVD to HDTV quality with Dolby quality 5.1 audio.
This company saying they made a video compression 10x smaller than MPEG4 is like Kia (an inexpensive car company) announcing they have a new car that 10x cheaper than a Lamborghini.

You know what? That really sounds like it will be basically animated vector graphics.

I mean, that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's still no mpeg4 replacement.

Is Java even going to make it in future PocketPC / SmartPhone based CE OS? I doubt it since MS is fairly anti Java at this point.

If it was that silly, I'm sure it would have been discredited a long time ago... then again, who knows :).

If Java is so useless why is Microsoft's latest language C# a total clone of Java? In fact why is the entire .NET drive a mirror of J2EE from Sun?
Microsoft know how good Java is, the only problem is they can't use it without getting sued the hell out of for changing it to only work on Windows. Java is only useless in the eyes of a Microsoft person because it doesn't tie you into Windows :)
OBTW There is Java on the Pocket PC (www.insignia.com)

That may be true, but Java is still the Devil.

This sounds like a really good tool for the wireless content providers IF it pans out.
I do not see how it is a replacement for MPEG4. As someone stated before MPEG4 was created for highquality output and compression.
Still streaming media that doesn't need to have a player installed on the device, well it would have to support Java.
I don't know how to write in Java, but I confess I do not see why there seems to be so many people trashing it. I think that Java is an awesome tool, that when used to it's full potential could revolutionize the software world. Now I am very pro MS, but this whole Sun vs. MS thing is just crap.
Any way for right now we will need to have something that can compress media to a very small file in order to work on current or even imediately forseeable wireless technologies. So hey this would be great for the wireless industry.
Last thing, Jason who is that little guy on your avatar?
Oh is that one of them there Marvel X People that Marvel is so protective of? :D

Not at the core OS level, but I believe I read that the Sendo Smartphone 2002 will have a Java VM on it. My HP had Chai - the OEMs can put whatever they want on their devices. :-)

Just to clarify I do know it is Wolverine/Logan/Whatever his real name was revealed to be in Origin. BTW if someone has a copy of Origin I can get or borrow email me. I am an X fan from way back.
As for Java, Sendo Will Have it. I think I also saw that the TI Phone will too.
I think all the OEM's if they are smart will include Java on their devices.

I wish Sun would release a PPC Java VM. Then eventually I could actually use my Pocket PC in Computer Science class to write Java code on. That would be nice.

What do you mean by "Java"? Is it:
- The concept
- The language
- The VM
- The implementation
- J2EE and other frameworks?
These are totally different things altogether. One can argue that the concept is indeed the holly grail of computing. I would agree that the language is clean and elegant. But at the same time, adding another layer of software that runs interpreted code may not be the most efficient things to do for small devices. I would also say that after more than 5 years of experience, it's a huge resource hog and slow running even on very powerful Unix servers. J2EE is another matter all together (running at the server). It's kind of independent from the language. It can be written in many languages.
Having said that, I am yet to hear a really good argument for Java on mobile devices. Please no marketing speak. State true advantages that only Java can achieve.
Quote from the Yahoo article mentioned above: "In order to target pocket PC and GPRS mobile phone owners, the video stream appears in a small display area."
So what does this mean, knowing the Ericsson T68 GPRS phone (the only one yet with a color screen) has a display area of 101*80 pixels, and that is about one tenth of that of a PocketPC device!!!
Forget about it !!!
