View Full Version : Welcome to Digital Media Thoughts

Jason Dunn

My fellow geeks, welcome to Digital Media Thoughts! It brings me great pleasure to launch this new site dedicated to all things digital media. I'm tremendously excited about digital media, and have been for a long time. I remember the first time I digitized a clip off a VHS tape - it was thrilling to take vulnerable atom-based, analogue data, and transform it into immortal bit-based digital form. I have a strong archival streak in me - I enjoy capturing memories, archiving them, and getting creative with presenting the memories. I'm the kind of person who snaps a lot of photos at family events, then the same day I'll transfer them over to my computer, re-name them all, rotate the images, and probably get rid of the red-eye and crop them all to boot. I'm serious about preserving memories!<br /><br />Our focus here at Digital Media Thoughts is to make this site the most useful site possible for you as a digital media enthusiast. We'll post daily bits of news gathered from around the Web, link to the best articles and reviews we find on other sites, and write our own reviews, columns, and step by step tutorials. We've put together a team of opinionated editors, so expect to see a few rants and raves popping up - we're not afraid to share our opinions here at Digital Media Thoughts, and while we have sponsors and bills like most sites, they don't influence our editorial freedom. We'll tell you exactly what we think, every time.<br /><br />If you've visited <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com">Pocket PC Thoughts</a> or <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com">Smartphone Thoughts</a> before, you'll be familiar with how things work here. Digital Media Thoughts (sometimes referred to as DMT) is part of the <a href="http://www.thoughtsmedia.com">Thoughts Media Network</a>, and a sister site to Pocket PC Thoughts and Smartphone Thoughts. Both run atop the Thoughts Media Engine (designed by Fabrizio Fiandanese), and will have identical functionality. Over time, we'll be launching more Thoughts Media sites, and a powerful synergy will develop between them.<br /><br />We're just getting started, so stick around - if you're a digital media enthusiast, this is the place to be!<br /><br />Jason Dunn<br />Executive Editor<br />Digital Media Thoughts<br /><br />PS - We're still working out a few kinks in our new system, so be patient. If you're reading this on January 31st, you've caught our "soft launch". We wanted to go live to see how things work, but we don't kick it into high gear for a couple of weeks. In the meantime, feel free to post in the forums and explore the site. Over the next week or two, I'll be working on getting prizes from some of the top digital media vendors in the world, and tuning the site for our grand opening. When is the grand opening you might ask? You'll know when, because there will be a lot of noise about it all across the Web. :D

Since there was the PPCT thread (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23855&highlight=janak+avatar) on Janak's avatar change, perhaps there should be suggestions for Jason's? ;-), well at least until he uploads one himself...

With all the 'thoughts' themed sites, perhaps a thought bubble with a digital camera inside?

He mentioned on a thread at PPCT somewhere that he had already picked it (that's one of the last steps before launching a Thoughts site apparently). It peaked my curiousity.

Will it follow the theme so far?

The first obvious guess would be Hulk. That's not my guess though. Iceman would look good with the colour scheme. Ditto Silver Surfer...

Just did a little search over at Marveldirectory.com (http://www.marveldirectory.com/) and think I have nailed Jason's new Avatar. I'll guess Shatterstar (http://www.marveldirectory.com/individuals/s/shatterstar.htm). So much of this character sounds like Jason to me:

Identity: Secret; the general populace of Earth is unaware that Shatterstar is an extra-dimensional being
Occupation: (current) Adventurer, (former) Arena warrior, revolutionary
Legal status:None on Earth; wanted for acts of rebellion on Mojoworld
Place of birth: Mojoworld in an alternate future

So far so good. Jason's definately got that Mojoworld feel. :D

Soon afterwards, Mojo made Cable and Shatterstar his prisoners and transformed them into digital images in one of his television programs. In the course of the program, Shatterstar was mortally wounded in combat. Mojo's sometime ally Spiral teleported Cable and Shatterstar back into reality, where they regained their true forms.

Well, I don't know if Jason has ever BEEN a digital image, but he's taken quite a few!

Other abilities: Shatterstar has had extensive training in many forms of the martial arts of Mojoworld; in particular, he is a master swordsman.

I offer this (http://www.buildingwithbaywest.com/2002_05_01_archive.html) and :ninja: for proof.

I don't know about the long hair however....maybe I can find a picture of Jason with long hair.

Hey Jason, any chance of turning on mobile formatting of this site for everyone until subscriptions are available? I just tried to browse the site from my PPC and after logging in I was sent to the desktop formatted version of the site. If I retyped the URL again to include "/mobile" all I get is the front page with no options to go deeper at all.

Having been on PPCT for the past couple years, I know how awesome the articles, reviews, rants, and forums are going to be! I'm not sure about that. It would take a while to happen (I'm guessing around 2 years), but I could definitely see DMT surpassing PPCT. Digital media isn't nearly as small a niche as PocketPC is. It will just take some time for the word to spread. 8)

I bet DMT out does PPCT before the end of the year and maybe even sooner. Take one looke at what went on at CES this year, and you can see that Sony, Microsoft, Intel, and all the other huge names in technology are working to flip our world upside down with faster, better and more advanced technology. And most of it is in the form of digitial media/entertainment.

This web site is genious because it will grow with the growth of digital media. Take one look at the recent push for online music services, personal video players, digital cameras, mp3 players, personal video recorders and more. The growth of those categories are going to push the growth of DMT. DMT is literally getting a lot of free (indirect) advertising because digital media is the rave of the year. Jason Dunn, this is the Thoughts Media site to watch.

Actually, the broad range of topics is going to be one of its biggest challenges. Part of the magic of PPCT and SPT is that they are very niche portals. DMT is very broad. Yahoo gest wasted in the search engine race partly because Yahoo tries to be all things to all people and a search engine too. Google focuses JUST on maximizing the search engine space and they do it well. So when a person/customer thinks Google they come up with search engine. When they think Yahoo they think of Yahoo they think _____. In my case, I think email and finance. "A jack of all trades is a master of none."
