Thank you, thank you.

I followed your directions on how to change over my unlocked SMT5600 from ATT to Cingular today.

It worked flawlessly.

Thank you for saving me many hours on the internet and on the phone with technical support.

Does anyone know what setting(s) I have to change for Messenger to work with MEdia Works?

I can access the internet with PIE
I can send receive text messages

But what I can't do is log into MSN Messenger. When I attempt to login I get the following Error message.

"Unable to connect. Verify that your dialup or proxy settings are correct, and try again."

Where do I change these settings for Messenger?

Hey encece, wondering if you have tried using a Pocket PC or a laptop and the Smartphone as the modem with your Cingular plan.

I am finding that a lot of Cingular users are running into trouble setting it up. Wondering if it is a setup issue or if Cingular is blocking dial up networking?

Thanks

The values should be the same for the V551, but the menu and screens will be different.

Since Smartphone Thoughts is devoted to Microsoft Smartphones; not sure if we have any V551 gurus. :-) It would save you time if you ask this question on a site like Howard Forums. (http://www.howardforums.com) ;-)

Thank you so much, that did the trick. :D (well, a little backtracking was also in order because in trying to get everything working I messed up a previously correct setting)

I have an Audiovox SMT 5600 unlocked and working on Cingular. Using the settings at the top of this thread, I have web access (with IE), SMS and MMS functionality, and Active Sync works wirelessly with my Exchange server. However, MSN Messenger will not work. When I try changing my proxy as noted above, I lose my Active Sync functionality and MSN Messenger still doesn't work; I think the "Connects from" and "Connects to" are backwards? When I flip them around, my Active Sync functionality is restored, but still no MSN Messenger.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks so much for your time,

Daniel

I have my SMT5600 with AT&T and am on the unlimited mMode plan. If I apply these Cingular settings, will it work? will I have to pay extra? Can I have both mMode and MEdiaWorks settings on my phone and use them both?

Thanks,

Atul

Since you have service with AT&T, you will have to stick with mMode settings.

Even though AT&T and Cingular have merged. I am guessing the these settings go with the carrier contract. If you have Cingular contract then you must use MEdiaWorks and if you have AT&T, you will need mMode.

And yes, you do have to pay and get the data service (mMode or MEdiaWorks depending on your carrier) activated on your contract. ;-)

One site I know that will sell you unlock code is:

http://www.c500-unlock.com/

I haven't used it because I didn't need to.

I just used c500-unlock.com to unlock my new phone last night. Worked w/o a hitch. But, it's $38 per phone to unlock, so you might want to ask for a partial refund from the sellers...

tom [email protected] laptop parts new and used and laptop sales This is a common ruse on ebay. Tell the seller to take the phones back and refund your money with shipping, or you will file with ebay. That is the only way to make sure you get your money back.

I haven't been able to use MSN with t-zones either. I assumed it was because some ports were blocked on t-zones... so Cingular and others don't work with it either. :?

So if I change all these settings in my SMT5600 to what is listed in the first post I'll basically have a free Media Works package, or is this something else?

Thanks,

I got an ATT branded Audiovox SMT5600 from Ebay to replace my Cingular phone. I transferred the SIM card and was able to make and receive voice calls and text msg. I follow the instructions in this forum to set the phone for Cingular, but I still get the following error messages when I try to access any web site/internet.
"Unable to connect. Verify you have network coverage and try again".
I've spent hours with Cingular tech support and they were not even close to being helpful.
When I put the SIM card back to my old phone, I can still access the interenet, so it's not lack of service.
I would appreciate any help and suggestions. Thanks much!

Here are the Cingular Settings using the $19.99 unlimited data MediaNet service. Media Works is WAP only but internet access is gained via a proxy. Any setting you have seen using ISP.CINGULAR will not work and may be what was causing most problems. Those settings are used for the GPRS Connections on Data cards or higher rate GPRS Data plans.

Ok I'm new and paying to much for data with out a data plan. 8O
Now not to afend but are these settings legal?
If I upgrade to an unlimited media net plan for $20,
And use these settings to get email and internet explorer on my smt5600
there wont be any other charges from cingular?
Thanks,
Matt

no....you're paying $20/month to use these settings....if you didnt pay for MediaNet....the settings wouldnt do you any good anyway.

Corrections to typos and updated information have been made to the first post. All should be cool now and they match the Cingular Audiovox SMT-5600 settings.

Hello,
I am very new here, and very excited about my SMT5600! I would like to load all of the great applications and tricks for this phone.

I just followed the instructions for the MediaNet settings, but I'm not sure why I did this.
I have the $19.99 plan with Cingular, Bought the phone from LetsTalk.com.
Could someone please let me know what exactly this is for and how it helps?

THANKS! 8O

If your phone was a cingular branded phone....you didnt need to do this as the settings should already be there. But if it was an ATT or other branded phone....then you did need to do it.

The settings allow you to access Cingular's MediaNet on your phone, so you can receive email, surf the web, send MMS messages, and use any other app that needs to access the web.

Without entering inthese settings...you wouldnt be able to do so. It's like entering in your internet connection settings on your pc. Without knowing where to call...your phone would never be able to connect.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info.
So would it hurt that I made these changes? I can't remember if anything was different in the beginning.

They're the same. Do a hard reset to restore the originals if you want.

I applied all of the setting listed, and everything works except for streaming in WMP. I am trying to stream internet radio stations (which I could do before moving to Cingular), and I get the following error:
Cannot play the file because the proxy server is not responding. I have tried to locate a configuration option for the proxy server the WMP uses, but have not had any success. Any help would be appreciated.

Very helpful, thanks much! Everything seems to work on my i-mate SP5 when set as per this post with one small exception, I get a "User barred" error when trying to send an MMS message. Any ideas?
