Audiovox 5600 or similar on Cingular?

I want a smartphone... I've seen so much bad written about the 220 so far it's turned me off from that phone. I looked at the 5600 at the att store here in town, and like it. I'd like to get one, but I've heard there's no way to unlock it yet, is this true?

And rumors have been, up till now, that if you have an att phone and switch to cingular, you have to get a new phone, they won't be unlocking them to work with cing... :(

I am in the same boat. I am hoping that very soon the Audiovox 5600 is available as a Cingular model due to the merger.

I am on my parents "family plan". Does anyone know how a contract on that works? Am I required to keep my current phone for the length of the contract before I can look into something else?

I've had the 5600 for two weeks now and AT&T assured me that it would continue to work once the merger went thru. Sure hope that was accurate.
