What makes this better than the Mitac 8380 other than the size and 2003?

Better listed talk/standby times. I think more RAM.

Hmmmm....not really worth an upgrade if an OS update becomes available. But nice if you don't have a smartphone yet.

i think the size is a major factor - the 8380 was a bit of a monster

I guess the Mitac's size is all a matter of opinion.
My friend has a Motorola flip phone. (I for get which model....700i?)
The Mitac wasn't that much bigger than that. But it did a hell of a lot more.

Yup; it's definitely the size advantage. Things just basically get smaller by the day, these days ... until I can no longer hold 'em in my paws :? There has to be 'just nice' sizing for all things gadgety, and I believe the new 8390's just there. That said, if you currently own an 8380, there's really no strong reason to get the 8390 ... unless we're into tighter-fitting clothes

Beautiful Girl: "Is that a 8390 in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?:

Geek: "Oh YES!, It's a Mitac Mio 8390! It's the latest in Smartphone Gadgetry! The list of functions it can do is endless, like...."

Beautiful Girl: <walks away rolling her eyes>
:D

Anyone have any idea about a release date?

Assuming the specifications are accurate... Mio 8390 vs Mio 8380 Windows Mobile 2003 vs Smartphone 2002
better camera - 0.3 MPixels (640x480) vs 0.1 MPixels (320x240)
lighter & smaller
Java MIDP 2.0 supportPretty compelling reasons to upgrade actually - I'd do it just to have Windows Mobile 2003 (.NET Compact Framework support).

BTW, what's the "tiny self-portrait mirror near camera lenses" (http://msmobiles.com/news.php/1345.html)? Would this allow the user to use the camera for video conferencing as well?

just a mirror for getting yourself in-shot when taking pictures of yourself (as you can't see the phone screen when the camera is pointing towards you)
