I just ripped my first movie and re-encoded it for viewing on the smartphone.

At just over 155MB it looks and sounds really good. No skipping at all...all in landscape mode via PocketTV. Perfect for my next plane-trip. (If they let me use it on the plane.)

First I ripped the movie with SmartRipper. Then I made an AVI with DVD2AVI. Then re-encoded using TMPGEnc.

I don't know if this is the preferred method but it worked for me. :D

ooops...sorry. The original Matrix. The first step to having the trilogy on one 512 card! :D Maybe I could squeeze the Animatrix on there as well. But I'll have plenty of room until the 2nd and 3rd come out on DVD!

Very cool... 8) Not quite the theatre... but very cool. I've never encoded a video in TMPGEnc... I usually use DivX or WMV. How does this compare size wise to those? Just curious as to what is the best format. I may try encoding something and comparing them... if I get time later.

This is a screenshot from my phone using remote display. This is pretty much what I'm seeing on the phone.

encece it looks like you have encoded using the wrong aspect ratio, that's why the faces look tall and skinny.
You can fix this in tmpgenc under setting > advanced > source aspect ratio - try setting this to 1:1 (vga)

Ouch, I think I would get a crick in my neck turning it to watch at that angle. :P

That is actually better quality than I would have expected... it is actually pretty clear. Very nice.

Yes...I think I may have typed in the wrong size. I did notice it but I wasn't about to do it again as the whole process takes hours! I'll try that next time. Thanks.

One of the best tips I can give you is to crop out the excess black space above and below the image - it looks like you may have encoded it. You can trim a good 20% off your file size by cropping those out.

BTW, what bit rate did you use?

Someday we'll have a really great walkthrough on encoding video for your Smartphone. ;-)

Oh wow 8O, that's a whole lot better than i expected for a Smartphone; I wonder why they made the Smartphone UI so plain.

That was just full screen. All of the menus were hidden.

The size I used was 224 x 176...With a source 4:3 aspect ratio....That may be the reason for the slight vertical elongation. Should I have had the source set to 1:1???

The settings were set at....
MPEG-1
224x176
29.97fps
CQ_VBR 11
Layer-2
44100Hz 32kbps

Here is the tutorial I should have followed from the beginning:

Those are pretty good settings (as in quality)... I bet that really looks pretty good on the phone's screen. I would think 1:1 would have been the best aspect ratio to put it on... but I'm not as much of a digital video expert as Jason is, so he probably knows better.

yes encece, 1:1.
I had the same problem and setting it to 1:1 fixed it for me.
You should set it to 1:1, and encode for a few minutes, then check the output. Verify it's right before encoding the entire movie...

I have seen a program at a few sites for the DVD to smartphone.

Is this not a good way to do it since its all pretty much done for you?

I was thinking of purchasing it but decided to read up on it first.

Wow this is such and old thread. That program was probably just being thought of at the time. YES...I now have Pocket DVD Studio and it works great...easy and in one step!

Does Pocket DVD Studio produce files you can view on Win Media Player 10? Or does it only produce files for play on BetaPlayer?
