Default Nikon Ranked First in Japan Sales for Interchangeable Lens Cameras for 1H 2010

Nikon ranks as number 1.

In addition, just about every other company has managed to increase their share of sales volume at Canon's expense except for Sony. No wonder they were in a hurry to bring out the NEX cameras.

I have to admit, I'm a bit surprised by this! That's a huge jump up for Nikon since 2009, and what's interesting is they haven't released much of anything yet for 2010 in the DSLR space...I guess the D3x? But no new entry to mid-tier DSLRs, and those are the market share movers. I'm surprised Canon bled so much market share given the number of people I know who are buying Canon DSLRs this year, partially because Nikon has nothing new to bring to the table...(compared to Canon's offerings).

Yeah, somethin' just ain't right with those numbers. I'd have believed that jump were it this time last year, but with the 5DmkII and the 7D and the T2i all cheaper than (and in many ways superior to) Nikon's comparable, now 2008-2009 models?!?! This just makes no sense. Of course, it is Japan, so perhaps there's something going on there that isn't reflected in the raw data...

If you go to the BCN page, it shows breakdown by camera too. The Kiss/Rebel/500D/550D isn't selling as fast, but the D90 is. That's where the money and sales volume really lies; the low and mid-range cameras. The D90 is still a really good camera, and if you discard the video area, it's still a better camera than the 550D. I suppose the increased sales volume is due to the price reduction that took place sometime in the first half of the year.

Looking at the camera list, I'm amazed the D3000 is #5. It's a bit of a lackluster entry-level camera from Nikon. Also, the NEX-5 is at #12, despite it appearing quite late in 1H 2010. I think Sony might have some good sales volume with that one (at least in Asia).
