Default Microsoft Releases New Daylight Saving Time (DST) Update for Windows Mobile

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949168

"This update supersedes and replaces update 941898. (Update 941898 was released in August 2007.) This update includes daylight saving time (DST) changes that were signed in to law after update 941898 was created. If you have already applied update 941898, read the descriptions of the specific time zone changes that are discussed in the "More information" section to determine whether you should apply this update."

Microsoft has released a new DST update for Windows Mobile that covers changes to Arabic Standard Time and Australian Central/Eastern/Tasmania Standard Time. The latest update is cumulative, so it includes timezone changes featured in previous DST updates. Hit Microsoft's Knowledge Base for further information, along with the desktop and device installers for Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.

A bit off tangent but I found this article interesting reading:

Quote:
For decades, conventional wisdom has held that daylight-saving time, which begins March 9, reduces energy use. But a unique situation in Indiana provides evidence challenging that view: Springing forward may actually waste energy...Their finding: Having the entire state switch to daylight-saving time each year, rather than stay on standard time, costs Indiana households an additional $8.6 million in electricity bills. They conclude that the reduced cost of lighting in afternoons during daylight-saving time is more than offset by the higher air-conditioning costs on hot afternoons and increased heating costs on cool mornings.

Have you ever recieved an update?
Perhaps these frequent DST changes were all they had in mind with the WU program.

Please note that the update installs and soft resets your device without warning once you kick off the install. In most cases this shouldn't be a big deal but you will want to save anything you have open before running this.

Reboot? My Treo shows no appearance of install until I look in Remove Programs. It shows:

Microsoft Corp. Extended DST Up...

Hello? Can anyone explain why my Treo did not reboot? I ran the desktop version twice.

Never mind. Uninstalled and re-ran. Reboots like everyone else.

Question: If I have no plans to ever travel to the Middle East or Australia, is it necessary to run this update? This is not clear on the Microsoft site.

Have you installed one of the previous DST updates that cover areas more applicable to you? If you have, then you can probably give this one a miss. That said, I'm not sure what your work environment is like. If you have colleagues in the Middle East or Australia who set up, say, online meetings, then this update will ensure that Outlook gets the times right, regardless of whether you plan to travel to these regions.
