HTC Touch Dual Reviewed
"The phone�s appearance catches the eye extremely easy. If you pull the phone out of the suede bag, included in the box and people around you don�t start asking you questions like �Is this Prada?� or �Is that a new model by Samsung?", then most likely, you are surrounded by individuals, who have spent the last year in a Buddhist temple."
We've got a rock solid review here of HTC's Touch Dual, which features a faster processor, larger memory and a sliding keyboard over its Touch predecessor. The reviewer(s), while a bit taken by the looks of the device (see quote above), hasn't neglected any other aspect of the Touch Dual with a run through of the entire software suite, the camera and SPB benchmarks plus a whole slew of hi-res photos. While the Touch Dual gets a 9 out of 10 in the review, if you're in the market for one you should take note of the concerns expressed over so-so call quality, weak multimedia capability and lack of wi-fi.

Just once i'd like to see a model come out that didn't LACK anything. It seems like every model that is on the market today has all of these great features and an even longer list of "lacks" as well. Either you get short changed on wifi, 3g, a keyboard, ram/rom, cpu speed, gps or something instead of a phone that is an super-"has everything" model. Maybe i'm one of the few who wants a business model that can also do everything else as well, maybe I'm one of the few who doesn't mind carrying a brick that does everything I want it to.
I'll just keep waiting and using my HP2215 until then.

so-so call quality, weak multimedia capability and lack of wi-fi. and they gave it 9 of 10? Seems like that should be lower, but everybody has an opinion.

Would that be the HP2215 that lacks wifi, any phone at all, a keyboard, gps, lots of ram/rom and a fast cpu? :lol: I've gotta say, I loved my 2215 at the time but I'd rather have all but one or two of those things than none at all. My Touch does everything my 2215 did and lots more. And even if there are a few features I wish it had (wifi and GPS), it's still a big step in the right direction. Life is compromise... otherwise, what would you have to look forward to?

Have to say that my Touch Dual is the business - had many PPC's in my time - and none better than this. OK so it doesn't have WiFi - not everyone needs it - I dont miss it. Nothing wronmg with the MultiMedia in my opinion either - this is the first PPC I've had that will access YouTube video straight out of the box. I love the TouchFlo interface and unlike so many other devices this is a slim sexy slinky device that gets noticed rather than 'Brick' for most of the devices that have everything you might ever want. And as for quality - what? This is a well put together machine - perhaps the review model wasn't representative?

i understand that Telestra will be offering a 3G/850 Mhz version or Austrailian users... I wonder if it would work on the US 3G/850 Mhz band. i have a Sprint (HTC) Touch (400mhz processor with 256/128 ROM & RAM) that's a little workhorse. if i were to get a GSM version of the Touch, the Touch Dual with 850 band and 3G would be my choice.

No WiFi is a deal-breaker
(for me)
I can do without some things, but I just can't see having a PPC without WiFi. I was really quite enthusiastic about the Touch Dual. It has almost everything else I'd want (It also doesn't have a HiDPI screen), but I really want WiFi for fast connectivity.

I'd have said the same thing a few weeks ago, and certainly an 802.11g connection has faster throughput than mobile 3G, but in all the ways that matter, my touch actually seems faster than my previous wifi ipaq (802.11b though). It's not that data comes through faster, it's that I just start up email or Opera and it's ready to go. Connecting isn't a separate process from using.
With wifi, I always had to click on that HP wifi today icon, then wait while it tried to connect. Half the time, it wouldn't work, or I'd be somewhere that I had to open the browser and agree to terms before it would let me do anything. The best case was about 15 seconds (at home where it was permanently part of the network) and the worst was never getting connected (and that happened a lot).
With my Touch, the EVDO connection is often already active and, if not, it's only a couple of seconds before I'm ready. And I don't have to tap something to connect and then go to my application; I just start the application and it connects if it needs to. One of the best parts is that I can connect almost anywhere instead of having to go find a cafe somewhere.
So while I would love to have wifi if it was seamless in switching between EVDO and wifi, this is much more usable in an every day sense and I really don't miss wifi while I'm using the device.
