NVIDIA's APX 2500 Does Quake and More
"In one word or less: wow. NVIDIA's MWC announcement of the APX 2500 cellphone applications processor was a stunner and we expect the cellular community is going to welcome them with open arms. We've covered what the hardware is all about, but we've also found out it'll be packin' 7.2 Mbps HSDPA in many flavors, quad-band GSM, WiFi, Bluetooth, and it frickin' plays Quake 3, like a monster. While gaming doesn't mean it'll be a successful device, the 2500 certainly seems to have the grunt to get some serious work done and with its Windows Mobile 6 underpinnings, it'll play well with current software."
While we reported on and drooled all over the NVIDIA's APX 2500 earlier in the week, the folks at Engadget Mobile were actually fortunate enough to get some hands-on time with it. The verdict? Well, check the snippet above.

Hmm, maybe this is why the new SonyEricsson XPERIA X1 is so fast, and why the pressenters wont let repporters have their hands on the device, without supervision :?

Oh good. Another high end graphics chip that no one will write software for to take advantage of it because no company will use it because it's too expensive and they are too busy producing cheap, underpowered slider clones that all look alike
Oh, I'm sure HTC or someone will put it in an $800 megaPDAphone that you can only get in Europe and Asia. And there still won't be much software written for it except one or two high end concept games (like Quake).

I remember about the last 'futur" graphic card. Only two devices get it.
The powerfull XDA Flame and the HTC X 7500. So nobody created games only for two devices even if normally they are more powerfull about graphic.
I will hope this new Nvidia card will be implanted in more devices.

Having a high end graphics chip is one thing, actually writing drivers so your software takes advantage of it is another, according to HTC.
I'm sure they'll put it in their next PDA, and advertise it, only for some youtube video to show it running slower than a PPC2003 once again...

Does anyone know if the apx 2500 is compatible with the GoForce 5500 in two of the iMate Ultimate devices? I'm hoping they're similar enough that multimedia applications made for one will also work on the other.

Note that the HTC X7500 doesn't have a GoForce 5500 (if you meant that), "just" an ATI 2D accelerator. This is why it's not possible to make use of it, "only" when playing back MPEG4 Part2 (aka DivX / XviD) videos.
BTW, speaking of support for the GF 5500, it indeed is very lame. I've, some months ago, published a compatibility list with the (then) current, 3D accelerated games & emulators. Since then, nothing has changed, unfortnately - except for the developer of DoomGLES / HereticGLES having bought a Flame and having started to make his games GF 5500-compliant too, not only 2700G.
Also, we'll still wait a LOT for the GF 5500 to be supported by CorePlayer.

Hope so. I'll contact the nvidia folks on it (hope I find their business card); will definitely publish the answer on my MWC report discussing nvidia (in my last chipset manfacturer 3D hardware acceleration-specific MWC report I've also cross-posted here in the PPCT forums, I elaborated on Samsung and Imagination Tech. (and mentioned Qualcomm)).

The X1 is Qualcomm-based and, therefore, hardly contain any additional 3D chip. After all, the Qualcomm MSM7200A itself has 3D HW acceleration support - see my latest MWC reports on this, where I've reported on a not-to-be-named far-east ODM's having been working on the 3D drivers for the chipset.
