Default Google Updates Maps for Windows Mobile

http://www.google.com/gmm/whatsnew.html?hl=en

"This seems to be the week for Googles mobile app updates, right? The company has just released a revamped version of the Google Maps for Windows Mobile. The new version comes complete with a couple of changes, including functional route mapping and clearly marked turn-points on every loaded map. The new version is also the first to be released as a stand-alone native Windows Mobile app, having graduated from Java-midlet status. The updates, which bring the software up to version 1.7.1.4, are certainly welcome, but they still fail to bring Google Maps up to par with some of the other mobile mapping solutions currently available. Sure, its free, but voice commands never hurt anyone, right?"

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the US and you decide to visit Plymouth, Massachusetts for an authentic original dinner of venison and wild fowl. Now the mobile version will offer route mapping. They offer a java demo on their site. According to their directions, it would take 2 days to get from Redmond, WA to Plymouth, plus 1 minute of traffic delays. It seems a little hopeful for traveling 3,083 miles but looks like you should have left yesterday.

Say what?!
Am I missing something? Google maps has been a windows mobile native app for over a year. I certainly have run it without installing a Java midlet manager and always installed it via a .CAB file.
This is not the first release as a WM app.

I know you're just quoting another blog, but I believe they're in error.

Default Can I use this with a PPC?

My PPC (Dell Axim X50V) is wifi capable but not a phone. Can I still download maps and save them on my Axim to follow the directions to my destination even though it cannot tell me where I am (because I am not online while traveling)?

I don't know - that's an average of roughly 63 mph for 48 hours. You could do that if you had a huge fuel tank, a toilet in your car, a stack of Red Bul and chips, and two or three people sharing the driving :-)

I think I may be missing a step in trying to install google maps for mobile. My device is not a phone, just a stand-alone PPC (HP4150), but everything I find online says it should be compatible. I have tried to install gmaps several times and always get an error message saying it failed to install. I've tried downloading to my PC and moving the cab file to my PPC. I've tried directly downloading the cab to my PPC. I've tried installing the cab by tapping on it through explorer, and I've tried installing it with MemMaid's cab installer. Nothing has worked so far. Can I install it on my device, and if so how should I do it? Please help.
Thanks,
John
