Default Universal Flash Storage: Yes, Yet Another Flash Storage Format

http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13338

"The goal of the new specification, dubbed Universal Flash Storage (UFS), is memory cards with high-speed access to large multimedia files, while at the same time reducing power-consumption. The target performance level is a significant advancement beyond that of the varied flash cards popular today. Under the new standard, a 90-minute movie that that takes up 4 GB on a memory card will be loaded in seconds."

The specs promise a lot, but with multimedia gaining ground as part of the raison d'etre of mobile devices, fast access will become more and more important. Only, just why does it have to be a new format? Luckily this new standard won't be finalised until 2009, so we probably won't see devices designed around these new cards until 2010.

That's the great thing about standards... There are so many to choose from.

Not to be flippant, but does it matter? It's going to be small. I mean, how much smaller than a MicroSD card can you really get before you have to be careful not to breathe too hard?

These "standards" are getting ridiculous. What's wrong with the SD standard? Can't they make a backwards compatible yet high speed/high capacity card with the form factor of a Micro/Mini/SD card?

That's funny, cause just today as I was organizing my CF, SD, MMC, and Memorystick cards, I was thinking that this world really needs another flash memory standard. And it looks like my wish came true!!! YAYAYAyayayayayayay!!!!!!!!

Fantastic! So, now, after I have transfered all my files and stuff from SD to microSD I should get my money and files ready for another "upgrade"! Who can ask for more? :devilboy:

For the example, a 4GB movie downloads in seconds...well, doesn't everything download in seconds with the existing format...it may be MORE seconds...but seconds nonetheless.
