Default Mystery HP PDA at FCC

http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/22/...hows-up-in-fcc/

"Not too many details on this one just yet, but it appears that Hon Hai has applied for FCC certification on a mysterious HP handheld. The PDA, which touts a model number of HSTNH-F16C, offers up Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and WiFi (802.11b/g) capabilities, USB 2.0 connectivity, and apparently comes with a lovely slip case (pictured) 'to protect it from scraping.'"

What's interesting about this report - not that there's much to it - is the revelation that Hon Hai is developing this PDA for HP. If you've never heard of them before, Hon Hai are a huge Taiwanese ODM/OEM contractor for companies such as Dell, HP, and Apple, and are better known by their trade name of Foxconn. They've supplied parts to HTC before for previous iPaq models like the h2210 and appear to be HP's ODM partner for the latest iPaqs - you can even buy parts direct. Hopefully, with FCC cetification under way, you'll see the new line of iPaqs that we reported on before for the Christmas shopping season.

I am excited about these new phones. It will be hard to sway me away from the kaiser but it might be possible. All the HP devices i have had were very solid units but their phones so far have been just so so.. status quo. Just a bit behind the curve. Which usually means they are stable and reliable but just not as cool as the HTC offerings.

The only problem i see with these HP phones is that i will probably not be able to buy one that AT&T has not bastardized. I am VERY unhappy with what they have done to the tilt. So here's hoping for a unlocked non at&t version of the new HPs.

Precisely my first reaction!

So am I - my very first PDA was the venerable h2210, and I don't mind coming back to HP (no-OS upgrades notwithstanding). The leaked specs sound like they're coming up with some neat stuff. Hopefully we'll know more within a month or so.

I'm shocked that nobody is more jazzed up about this.

I'm just afraid I'll get all excited, only to find out that either it's not true, or that they will have taken away some feature I can't live without, like a large VGA screen.

We haven't really seen anything yet AD, it's hard to get excited about'em. I'll bet we'll see more enthusiasm if/when mockups start appearing.

I have always enjoyed the HP devices and the only thing i have ever hated about them was when they took away NEVO.
Ill never forgive them for that .....

I just picked up an ipaq 510 voice messenger, and can't get over how small it is. I was carrying a hx4700 and a samsung t509. The 510 is a smaller footprint than the t509, just a bit thicker. The wifi in it is awesome - one of these days I'll hook up the internet calling. I do miss the big bright touchscreen and speed, but don't miss the weight and bulk of multiple gadgets.
