Default Official HTC WM6 Upgrade Statement: Free, But Not for All Devices

http://fets5.freetranslation.com/?s...ssword=xO0y3uwr

"The HTC S710 is one of the first Windows Mobile 6 devices to ship, and will be followed by a range of products based on the new operating system in the coming months. HTC is also offering WM6 upgrades for the most popular devices in its current range. This includes recently launched messaging products, which will enjoy the greatest benefits of Windows Mobile 6, such as the HTC Advantage, the HTC TyTN, the HTC S620, and the HTC P4350. The upgrade will also be available for the award-winning HTC P3300, plus some of our operator-branded devices. The upgrades will be rolled out from June, in line with our operator partners strategies."

According to the PDF hosted by SoloPalmari, the free upgrade will be directed towards devices which have a focus on "messaging". Ironically, the HTC P3600, which just received a ROM-enabled GPS upgrade, is not listed. If you can read Italian, here's the original SoloPalmari story or the link to the "translated" version. Also, if your HTC device is not listed, they do say that they will consider providing the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade to other devices if their operating partners see significant demand for it. So, demand away!

Yes, the lack of P3600 upgrade is a BIG letdown, particularly because the MUCH older TyTN, on the other hand, does receive the upgrade.

It is very odd, since the P3600 fits the "messaging" filter. Hopefully, there will be enough response from users to get HTC to offer it.

Figures - no official Wizard upgrade, even though it's a device you can still buy through the main sites of the major US carriers. Guess that we're just supposed to cough up the $400 to buy a new device, even though the Wizard is < 2 years old and supports WM6.

Doubt the carriers will pass on the demand requests for a Wizard upgrade to HTC - they'd rather we buy a new device and renew our contract for two years.

Seems that my iPaq got a similar treatment a while ago - supported upgrade path on the hardware itself, but HP decided it wasn't worth the effort to sell an upgrade for it. I remember being pretty ticked then because Compaq had been pretty good about providing at least one OS level upgrade per device.

And people wonder why the XDA forums took off so much? Carriers and manufacturers expect us to keep on paying for new devices with a new OS rather than providing us an upgrade path or even just fixing problems with the current device. Of course people will flock to an unofficial, but talented, resource. :-P

Default Been Using Upgrade For A While

I "upgraded" my 8525 with a ROM from XDA Developers and my 8525 went from being nearly unusable to being my daily device again. I had been using a Treo 750. but Windows Mobile 6 on the 8525 is much more stable, and very well done. I really don't understand why it is going to take until June to get this rolled out, since, in its current state, it is far more stable on the Cingular 8525 than the Windows Mobile 5 version is (and also much faster). Bluetooth was nearly unusable on the 8525 before I flashed it with the new ROM. I, for one, will wait until someone "cooks" a ROM from the official one Cingular releases, since the cooked ROMS are almost always better (in my opinion). :microwave:

There's a whole forum on XDA for WM6 and Wizards. Whether they're legit or not - no idea, but they are there.

There are several ROM's for the Wizard (the 8125 is a Wizard), and you can find them in the Wizard Mobile 6 forum. Please read the forum CAREFULLY before flashing a new ROM, and before asking any questions. I read the posts for over a week before I flashed my 8525 ROM, and I did not have to ask any questions when I was done reading. The users there tend to be obnoxious uber geeks with a penchant for publicly humiliating novices, so READ, READ, READ before asking questions. The answers are all there, believe me. :deal:

Quick note on the process:

1. Unlock CID (SIM is optional) - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!
2. Read on the differences between G4 and G3 devices - there IS a difference
3. Read the instructions on whatever ROM you're considering
4. Read them again
5. Read through some of the posts to see if there are any major issues
6. Download your original ROM from the manufacturer to have handy if needed.
7. Backup your device (SPB Backup, Sprite, etc)
8. Follow the instructions, including the part where it says to downgrade, upgrade, etc if necessary. The most important instruction is to wait. Be patient. The ROM updates always appear to hang at a certain point but are still working.
9. If necessary, read up on the BootLoader mode. That will usually enable you to reflash your original ROM from the manufacturer.

The most important thing is to actually do some reading. The users on the forum aren't so much uber-geeks with an attitude as they are uber-geeks who get really, really tired of answering questions from people who haven't even tried to look at the sticky posts or even the first post in the thread.
