Purpose of HTC Census Revealed: Collecting Census Data!
"We just received more information about the HTC Census. The device will be used for collecting ... Census data. In order to cut down Census costs, U.S. Census Bureau started a five-year, $600 million project called Field Data Collection Automation (FDCA) program. The project should transition the usually paper process to wireless one. Harris Corporation was selected as the systems integrator, while HTC along with Sprint PCS are part of the support team. HTC is responsible for providing the mobile computing equipment, while Sprint will provide telecommunication services. HTC Census is the actual device which would be used in 2010 Census and will be carried by about 500,000 enumerators."
I thought I was the only one who had a unique grasp of the obvious (at least my friends say so)! The HTC Census will ironically be use for...collecting census data. The device will support dual-band CDMA/EV-DO, WiFi, and a phone jack to ensure data can be sent in from the field. To secure the data, the HTC Census also sports a fingerprint reader. So, when you see your friendly neighborhood census collector in the coffee shop, they're probably just sending back data. It has nothing to do with taking a break drinking coffee. Um, yeah, that's it. :wink:

My last census taker was using a dell axim i believe... i asked him what he thought of it and he simply said: it pisses him off that if freezes so often. I looked through it and the census app they were using was taking up to much memory causing it to constantly freeze... so HTC can make a device specifically for a census program but the app designers need to refine it a bit.
