Default Samsung Debuts 8GB Mobile NAND Flash Chip

http://www.betanews.com/article/Sam...Chip/1173730733

"Samsung has begun shipping samples of a new 8GB NAND flash chip, which could be integrated into phones to eliminate the need for a separate memory slot. This would allow for smaller devices, the company says. Called moviNAND, the technology consists of four 50-nanometer 16-Gigabit NAND flash memories along with integrated MultiMediaCard support for companies who still wish to add expandable memory. At that size, the chip could hold some 2,000 songs, or enough GPS and point-of-interest data for the entire western world. It is also smaller than its 4GB predecessor, and processes data at speeds of up to 52 megabytes per second."

8O Wow! The GPS and POI data storage is amazing. Production will begin second quarter of this year. It should be interesting to see who's first-to-market using this new chip.

So THAT'S what Apple was waiting for! I guess they are still on track for their June release then.

Apple? Who's that? On their iphone spec page, they say:

Storage 4GB or 8GB
Sounds plausible to me.

Given the size of the iPhone, I doubt that Apple were waiting for this - they can fill the storage requirement using existing flash chips, like in the iPod Nano i.e. CF sized. Plus with Samsung only just releasing samples, I don't think we'll actually see devices using this for another year or so.

Geesh... You'll be able to put this memory chip in almost anything... Though I bet this time next year... We'll be talking about 40GB... Can you imagine using that to boot your computer on? How thin can your PDA get???
