Default GirlsGoneMobile Reviews The G-Tech Fabric Keyboard

http://www.girlsgonemobile.net/?p=654

"Data entry has always been a sticking point for PDAs and smartphones. Not really something you can fault them for - mobile devices are designed more for information access and communication, with a portable form factor taking precedence over large screens and full keyboards...The G-Tech Fabric Keyboard is possibly the most portable keyboard of all. Making use of Eleksen smart fabric technology, it offers a full-size QWERTY keyboard in an impossibly-thin, washable textile that can be rolled up and stashed into a back pocket. Is this the future of mobile computing? Read on to find out!"

This reminds me of a certain Star Trek episode featuring a roll-up piano keyboard. Seems that fabric might make a suitable keyboard (Heck, I have a keyboard lying around here that is just a laser projected onto any flat surface), Anyone out there dying to roll up their keyboard and take it with them?

Lack of a tactile response would be annoying (as would a beep everytime you hit a key). I type relatively fast, and don't think that I would be able to distinguish one beep from another when I "get going."

Maybe put a thin airfilled bladder under each key, so you know that you are hitting a key, and feel it press back. The bladders could be of springy plastic, with a hole for the air to escape when depressed (you shouldn't even need any valves). When you let go, they would refill. When you roll up the keyboard, they would just collapse under the pressure of the roll.

I am picturing a tiny version of a squeeky toy that you find after your dog rips apart his chewtoy. With that analogy in mind, you could put tiny squeeky toys in the keyboard to get a direct audible response (however, that would be no better than the beep - and likely worse).

You know, that's one of my favorite TNG episodes.

I also have a roll-up piano keyboard from The Sharper Image (which I've seen elsewhere too).

've been using a roll-up keyboard for a couple of months. It's silicone rubber, waterproof. Very nice tactile feedback. $20. A bit bulky though, not exactly pocketable. And being USB, it's fine with my Toshiba, but not workable with a lot of other PPCs.
