Gigabyte's g-Smart i200 Now Official

Following Tuesday's brief look at the g-Smart i200, Gigabyte sent out a press release today officially announcing the existence of the device, and a few extra details. What we already knew: it's a Pocket PC Phone Edition with a juicy 2.69" VGA display, 512MB of memory, and a DVB-H receiver. What we learned today: it'll ship with Windows Mobile 5.0 and AKU 3.0, and incorporate a mobile broadcast system developed by Penthera and Innoxius Technologies. You know, I'd really love to see one of these in action right now.

At the head-end, Innoxius Technologies� hardware is integrated with Penthera�s Broadcast Services Platform, a DVB-IPDC-compliant control and services solution which enables such unique services as media casting, interactivity, targeted advertising, and usage tracking. Broadcasters and mobile operators can use this system to develop a range of transaction-based revenue opportunities.

HTC should really check out why Gigabyte's and Nokia's phones are so popular: because of multimedia (and for example phone call recording).
I don't think I'd swap my Wizard to any current HTC device right now because of HTC's reluctance to listen to users' request like the above two things.
This model, on the other hand, is REALLY promising and may well become my next PPC phone (I assume it'll be able to record calls as with the porevious Gigabyte model). I've long wanted a phone with a built-in DVB receiver but didn't want to go the Nokia way because of the different OS. Now, this device seems to be very appealing.

If it's going to be sold worldwide, then.....hmmm, ill be needing an apointment with my bankmanager on monday :lol:

Cool - another reason to avoid using a mobile device to watch tv. That and the tiny screen. Hi res or no, tiny is tiny.

While on the topic of calls, it has a background noise generator, so you can simulate a typical working (*cough*) environment. It'll be interesting to see just how well it is implemented and what people use it for.

Gigabyte's devices typically are Asia-only, though there have been cases where other resellers worldwide have picked up the device and slapped their own brand name on it, so there is hope.

Speaking of which, would you happen to know a 3rd party software that does background noise generation for the Pocket PC? I think I may need it...
