Default An Introduction to Microsoft's Direct Push Technology

http://littlesandpit.blogspot.com/2...ct-push_12.html

"I think it would be fair to credit the popularization of the term 'Push Mail' to RIM's ubiquitous Blackberry device. For those living in a cave in Afghanistan for the last few years, push mail refers to the automatic receipt of Emails - implicitly assumed to be a handheld device, as soon as they arrive at the destination Email server. This is in contrast to the traditional way of receiving mails either via manually triggering it at the Email client or by performing an automated poll every x number of minutes. A proper appreciation of the value of push mail cannot be achieved without first acknowledging that the concept by itself introduces a paradigm shift - and a very niche one at that. Logically, the technology for on-the-road Email access has already existed for years prior to the introduction of the first Blackberry device. Internet connectivity can be achieved then in the form of a PDA or laptop paired to the right model of mobile phone."

This article is dated September 1st, but I don't believe we ever linked to it. Author Paul Mah has put together a nicely detailed piece - with a good amount of technical information - that covers push mail. If you'd like to learn more about push email, this is definitely worth a read.

Hi Jason,

It was a pleasant surprise to see my article referenced here. Actually the article was only written on the first week of October - but I was struggling to have the article appear the way I want it in blogger, hence I manually set the date to 1st Sep. So actually you were very quick to spot my writeup.

Basically what happened in the meantime was that I did an almost total revamp of my Direct Push Guide. Have broken down the original guide into separate sections, and almost tripled the information in the meantime. There is now an index page that can be found here. It should be safe to static link to this page from now on.

Have also added in a new section pitting Direct Push with the Blackberry here which might be an interesting read for some.

As usual, feedback is welcomed. Happy reading!

Regards,
Paul Mah.
