Default Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox T830 Reviewed

http://www.firstloox.org/index.php?...2_articleid=342

"To be honest - I fully expected to hate the Pocket Loox T830... So - why was it, after a period of using the T830 as my only Pocket PC, that I changed my mind to such a extent that I am seriously contemplating buying one?"

Duncan of Firstloox.org has finally delivered on that review he's promised - a very comprehensive look at the T830, warts and all. There actually weren't many (warts, I mean), and there are a lot of plus points - the battery benchmarks are amazing. I'm disappointed with the quality of the camera, but the rest of this device are all that could be hoped for. First units are tentatively expected to be shipped within the next couple of weeks. If you want to check out other reviews of the T830, both Solopalmari and GPSPassion have them, though these are on pre-production versions.

Great Review  One thing I would have liked to have know about this device is if it is like the IMATE PDA II when it comnes to reception and finding reception like all other recent new PDA-Phones which is that they seem to take forever to find reception and get a signal when just turning on the device and when in basements of shopping centers or undergrounds for transportation? Any dropped calls? Is reception as good as it is on a Nokia phone? Quick to find reception or does one have to sit there and wait like on all the other Pda-Phone devices?

Really hope it'll be out in the next couple of weeks. The more I read about it, the more that I want it.

But, really disappointed that there are no distributors here in Malaysia. Is Clove really the only place we can get the device from? Do we need to pay VAT even though we don't live in UK?

As of Thursday just gone the T830 was on target for first two weeks in October. That date has been stuck in place for a little while now.

No VAT if you order from outside the UK. So that would be 395 to you (or 380 if you use the FirstLoox discount - which, by the magic of the interweb, I see is c. 2,623 Ringgits...! ).

How do I get the FirstLoox discount?

Hisham,
Are you buying T830 from Clove too? I'd feel more confident if there's somebody else buying it too

Though I mention it so you can save some money - I'm not sure it would be the done thing to go into details on another website. The info is easy to find on our site though.

AS for confidence in Clove - you can feel every confident with them. They are good guys and very trustworthy.

Just join the FirstLoox.org forum!! You'll have access to the discount code then, plus membership in one of the nicest Pocket PC forums.

I would if I hadn't already bought a new phone! And if I wasn't still in love with my Loox 720!

Still, this is on my short list for new purchases next year, once I get a feel of the device from user feedback. IMHO, you won't go wrong ordering from Clove, though you might have some problems buying on Malaysian credit card (I've got a verified UK credit card, so Clove is generally my choice). The current price is a steal if you compare with the competition.

After reading the review on this, it looks like a really great phone.

These devices are getting soooo close to what I want, but they're not there quite yet.

This phone seems to have it all, but I just wish it had a taller screen - true landscape. I can't stand those square screens - they're a complete deal breaker for me.

And although the wireless on this thing is awesome, they need to round it out better on the cellular end and add IR. It can be done - the HTC Tytn has it all (just minus the GPS, which is a shame). I'd like to see a phone with all the wireless we crave (minus nothing): Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE with tri-band UMTS and HSDPA, SSIII or MTK GPS, WiFi b/g, BT 2.0+EDR (the Broadcom stack) with A2DP and AVRCP, and IR.

I also would've liked to see the memory doubled to 128MB on the RAM side. I cannot figure out why manufacturers of these devices insist on only 64MB RAM. People can blab on and on about battery life and all that nonsense as though an extra 64MB is going to kill the runtime, which it won't. The memory is going to have to be, and will be, increased some time, so the battery life argument as it relates to a slight memory increase is irrelevant at this point in the game.

If a phone like this could be created, but with the three changes above - landscape screen, the cellular rounded out and IR, and double the RAM, then this device would be absolutely perfect, IMO.

So close.

Absolutely agreed. Contrary to what most people state, current RAM memory (depending on the manufacturer - for example, the RAM in the x51v are pretty battery-hungry, unlike that of the hx4700) consumes really little power, particularly in a PPC Phone Edition devices, where the radio unit consumes WAY more energy than anything else (see my power mesaurements).
