Default HTC Secures Another Deal in Japan

http://www.htc.com/03-press-060928.htm

"High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), the world's leading provider of Windows Mobile portable devices, announced today that it has started supplying HSDPA Smartphones to SoftBank in Japan. The Smartphone, which has been named the "SoftBank X01HT," features HSDPA technology that will deliver a faster mobile broadband experience to Japanese customers (data transfer rates of up to 1.8 Mbps on downlink and 384 Kbps on uplink)."

After the linkup with Vodafone, HTC have scored another avenue for penetrating Japan's market - this time with Softbank. The X01HT is another HTC Hermes in disguise though obviously carrying the Japanese language OS - HTC might be going for a world record here ("How many names can we give to one device?"). Let's see: we have the X01HT, TyTN, Dopod 838 Pro and CHT9000, XDA Trion, Qtek 9600, VPA Compact III, SPV M3100, MDA VARIO II, i-mate JASJAM and let's not forget the rumoured Cingular version and HTC Japan's own hTc Z (someone please explain that bit of marketing strategy to me). Still, as the bard said: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet" If you can't get enough of the Hermes, you can download and drool over a couple of hi-res photos of the X01HT here.

There is only deal going on here - Vodafone Japan is no longer Vodafone. They sold the assets to SoftBank a few months back.

SoftBank is launching this device under their brand because there will be no more Vodafone Japan branding in the near future.

Thanks for the catch! That makes a bit more sense. The legal ramifications must have been doozer.
