Sprint to Release Samsung IP-830w World Pocket PC Phone?
"Does the model number vaguely ring a bell? Sure enough, this seems to be a Sprint-specific version of the Samsung i830 Pocket PC slider, packing both CDMA and GSM radios for globetrottin' goodness. True, Verizon's had the predecessor i730 for a good while now, but at least the i830 will come out of the gate with Windows Mobile 5 plus AKU2, and of course, that GSM support is going to be music to the ears of many a traveling businessman."
Engadget Mobile's found the Sprint factsheet (PDF) on the IP-830w, a version of Samsung's CDMA+GSM Pocket PC Phone, this time with WM5. This unit shares the same formfactor as the i730, which while featuring a cramped keyboard is otherwise solid and remains popular with users. However, I'd expect that, like Verizon, this will be way overpriced and targeted strictly to executives. :?

like all of Spent's world phones this one will be useless as it will lock the SIM side so you can only use Spent's GSM SIMs that charge you out the wazoo rates instead of prepaid SIMs from your locality.

It apparently has AKU 2.6, but the Channel9 Wiki doesn't mention an AKU 2.6.

You may then find this article to be of help. The latest AKU is 3, but there does exist a 2.6. (Heck, you commented on our post about it. )

Actually, Verizon has the i830 for $399 and the i730 is $299.

... wow. 8O I guess Verizon cut the price -- the original price was far higher. I'm glad to hear the correction!

Anxious
I am an i830 user who cannot wait until Verizon releases a WM5 update to the i830. Was supposedly going to come out to coincide with the Sprint release. Verizon, get off your a$$ and get-er-done!

Sprint Released Last Week
http://www.sprint.com/business/produ...PcsPhones.html
I'm getting 10 of these this week. I'll let you know what I think. I especially like:
-Windows Mobile 5.0 with AKU 2.6
-GPRS Data Roaming in 50 countries outside North America
-Battery: Up to 3.4 hours continuous talk time in digital mode. Extended battery provides 5.5 hours continuous talk time. Both are included in the box with the device.

Sounds great, doesn't it. I would like to see more hybrid devices on the US market. You'd think the chipsets would fit easily nowadays.
