HP iPAQ hw6900 Series Now Available In US
"The HP iPAQ hw6900 Mobile Messenger provides all the essentials to keep your business running even when you're away from the office -- phone, e-mail, and more secure access to business-critical information. At the same time, let your HP iPAQ keep life fun using GPS Navigation, the HP Photosmart Camera, and Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 Mobile to play your digital music and videos."
The iPAQ 6900 Series Mobile Messenger is now available for order from HP US! Listing at $599 (A far cry from the $849 the device is going for on eBay) the 6940 (sans camera) and 6945 (all bells/whistles) is set to ship on 9/13 for those who place orders today - so it's not a pre-order according to HP. The 6900 series leaves little to be asked for (although those who loathe square screens or who are addicted to VGA may argue that point), and from the opportunities I've had to play with one, I can say I'm really impressed with the distance HP has gone since the 6315 two years ago. Anyone considering ordering one?

I've been thinking of going the PPC Phone route very seriously lately.
This is the phone that I am toying with. The keyboard, wifi, bluetooth, and gps would make this the ultimate phone.
I just wish cigular or t-mobile would offer this phone with a contract so I could save some money on the phone. I can't see spending $600 on something that would take a little abuse from day to day use.

Had a Hp 6915 for about 15 minutes and sent it back! Just could not get on with the square screen. I also thought it was a bit light and plasticky.

It looks good to me...though I am addicted to my Universal's VGA screen. The square screen doesn't bother me as much as the overall low resolution. I might get one eventually. It is probably a better choice than the Treo's tiny keyboard...

I have had the 6915 in use for 2 months now, and it has been my most stable and reliable PDA ever! Ok, so it has no UMTS, and it's bulkier than the Treo's, but I have grown past my initial dislike of square screens, and nowadays I never leave home without my 6915.
I even ditched my TyTN (too many production flaws), my Universal (too slow & too bulky) and my GO 910 (I now have entire Europe door-to-door navigation on my Mini-SD card)
Even the headset clarity over Bluetooth is amazing, as is the distance of BT transfers.
To top it off, the www.lionbattery.com 1550mAh battery for JAM, 6500 and 6900 series allows it to go the extra mile.

I would be more interested if they offered a UMTS or EVDO connection, but EDGE just seems too slow now. However, my opinion is HP misses the boat with the size of this thing. They really don't need such a wide device with the lower resolution screen and could really have helped themselves by slimming it down and making it more phone like. I don't think they really understand the mobile phone market.

Looks like this "relatively cheaper" price is becaus the device is locked into Cingular. Any news as to how to unlock it and use it with T-Mobile would be helpful. I may order one if I figure this out.

Actually from everything I've read, it seems to be unlocked. The product details mention Cingular twice, however I think they copied and pasted some things from their 6515 listing:
Quote:
One-year parts and labor; 90 days technical support for software.
Warranty and support provided by Cingular Customer Service at 1-866-CINGULAR
(1-866-246-4852) or dial 611 from your iPAQ hw6500 Mobile Messenger series
|
Nothing on the page, however, seems to state that you must use the phone on Cingular. Also, on message boards it seems that some people purporting to be from HP claim that the devices are unlocked. Not the most reliable source, granted, but I haven't seen anywhere that it is locked.
