Windows Vista RC1: Missing Sync, New AutoPlay Dialog
"Recently the Windows Vista development team achieved a major milestone when they announced the Release Candidate 1 or RC1. RC1 signifies that most of the Vista code is now in place and that it just needs to be tested for bugs before it is announced as ready for launch. As a Windows Mobile enthusiast I am looking forward to the Vista enhancements in the form of Windows Mobile Device Center, which is the new platform for enabling data sync functionality for all kinds of mobile devices. It was last seen in action in Beta 2 Build 5384, but ever since then the Beta testers I believe have not seen this functionality. The same is true about the much awaited RC1 build. I could not enable the sync functionality. Windows Vista RC1 does detect my Smartphone but provides no further option to enable synchronization of the emails, contacts, calendar and other information. However I did notice one new feature."
If you were hoping to sample a bit of Windows Mobile sync action with Windows Vista RC1, you may be out of luck. Kris, over at Smartphone Thoughts, has given the latest release a quick test, and sync functionality appears to be missing (don't worry; it'll be available when Vista is officially released next year - most likely as a stand-alone package). On a brighter note, there is a new AutoPlay dialog, among other things. Head over to Smartphone Thoughts for screenshots and all.

I hope it's not another case of Microsoft stripping functionality (eg. WinFS) because they feel they couldn't get it to work in time for an "on-time" release (like they've ever hit that). I don't know whether it's a case of Microsoft being too ambitious in their planning, or if the accountants dictate releases, but whatever the case, it would be nice to see a feature complete RC1, since that's kind of the point of release candidates.

I stopped using the last beta of Vista for 2 reasons
1, it runs like a kitten through treacle on my laptop
2, there was no way to sync or even swap files with my PDA or my phone
I couldn't live with either of these restrictions. Still no sync, then I still cannot test RC1 either.

I did notice that you can now open files directly from the 'My Device' Explorer window rather than having to copy them to your desktop first.
