Default Raon Digital Unleashes the VEGA Ultra-Mobile PC

http://www.aving.net/usa/news/defau...=0&btb_num=5672

"Raon digital presented its new 4.3-inch UMPC 'VEGA'. With 4.3-inch 800x480 LCD and 6 hours of battery life, it is the smallest among UMPCs currently available in the market. You can have wireless internet access by connecting external WiFi while USB port and VGA port allow you to have extra keyboard and large screen monitor. The company plans to release the VEGA in September..."

According to Engadget, this comes outfitted with an AMD Geode LX800 processor, 30GB hard drive, and 256MB of RAM. GPS and DMB (Korean digital TV) add-ons are planned in the future as well. Is this a viable competitor to the OQO or Sony UX series? Well, unfortunately, there's no indication of whether this will ever make outside of South Korea (let alone the US). Check out the article link as there are quite a few jazzy snapshots of the unit itself.

Yay! Base on the current exchange rate it will be around $750.00.

It might be safe to say that Dell might aim for this price range, when their UMPC finally rolls out the plan.

It's nice to see technology and the world finally move in the direction of what I have been speculating for years.

The Vega is about the right size for a truely "walkman" style PC, or a personal UMPC. It can still be a bit thinner, but that is the direction where I thought PPCs should be going in some 3 years ago. The screen, still small is big enough to actually use, has decent battery life considering it's a PC, and best of all... it's a full fledge PC, which means it can run any applications for it's class without any of the gay limitations Microsoft limits PPCs and Windows Mobile devices. Now... If it only ran Embedded XP for faster bootups and instant on access with the HDD being used for it's storage, I'd dare say it be a perfect PPC/WM replacement for me.

With only 256MB of RAM, any desktop Windows application will run sloooowwwwly. Unless applications are rewritten for this kind of configuration, it is not that useful.

It is incredibly useful. The device wouldn't be used to play Half Life 2 or World of Warcraft but can easily run thousands of programs already available to Windows XP which companies can use that aren't' memory intensive. That alone separates this device from the toys, where unfortunately Windows Mobile/Pocket PCs resides in the eyes of many businesses.

I agree - my Sony U8G runs on 256MB memory, and the apps I run on it work absolutely fine.

Default one of the better umpc's wish it was even a bit narrower to be ideal

I like the look of this unit but wish it was built around a normal jacket pocket and thus be more like 3.5 to 3.75 inches wide and long like around 7.25 inches or so. At least it is more realistic to carry this when mobile. The ideal umpc would be the size of an HP Jornada 728 or and old Psion yet run xp. The advanatage to that size is that then it would have a real keyboard and fit in any pocket.

If you can't wait get this instead:

Fits into most pockets (125mm x 85mm x 25mm approx) yet runs full desktop apps (that's Firefox running in the picture).
