Sony Releases UX90 UMPC-like Device with 16GB Flash Drive and Mobile TV
"So you thought Sony's VAIO U with Core Solo was pretty hot, right, but that hefty chub and feedback-free keyboard were keeping you on the fence? We understand. Well, how would you feel if Sony aced the hard disk in favor of a silent running 16GB solid-state flash drive which bumps battery life by 13%, drops the weight by 29g to 492g, massively accelerates app launches, and should cut XP's resume and boot times by half? No, not doing it for ya? Then how about some hot OneSeg mobile digital television squeezed in for some on-the-go entertainment?"

This unit is currently only available in Japan (original Japanese press release can be found here), but perhaps this is a sign of things to come? I love the idea of the 16GB solid-state flash drive. That would be too small for a laptop, but for a mobile/miniature PC, I think it would be more than sufficient. The mobile TV is not as big of a deal to me, but man, Sony rarely disappoints when it comes to designing eye-catching units and this is no exception. The price tag is still floating pretty high at around the $1500-2000 range. So how would you guys compare this with the Sony UX50? What are your thoughts?

I don't get it. Why don't they just release laptops w/solid state RAM instead of HDDs? It would be cheaper and better, right?

I think the price engadget is looking at is mistaken - the HDD versions are going for US$1800 (UX180p). IIANM, the flash based ones are going to be considerably more expensive, more in the region of US$2800.

This machine is an answer to why there won't be any followup to iPaq 47xx.
Yes it's bigger, but not that much, and it's more expensive, but it also has much more (like more storage built in than you can add to iPAQ, more resolution, faster CPU, real XP applications...)
Machines like this with solid state, are the last death blow to high end stand alone PDAs, the Smartphones and Phone Editions did the rest...
I think this is Casio E-10x PSPC of UMPCs - not quite there yet, but with great potential. Who knows maybe with Vista next year we'll get the "iPAQ"...

Here is the price, not quite 2800, but it depends on the configuration...

i tried the UX50 personally, we got 2 in our company just to check out the potential of using one of those. Frankly speaking it blows my "OQO 01" away, as much as i used to love the OQO, i just cant use it anymore, it feels SOO SLOW compared to the UX50.
I actually played with the UX50 for an hour or so, & i can say that this new one with the upgraded Flash HDD will simply ROCK, as the UX50 is already a VERY SOLID device..

It's not 2800 but you are paying around 600 dollars more than the HDD model and you get half of the HDD capacity.
